What is the meaning of life?
Do you guys ever think about that? Why are we here, what does being a part of this big society where we labor away our lives for money mean?
I am not a very religious guy; I do not think there is a caring god that has some kind of plan for each of us.
For me, life is about having fun; I work to make money to have fun. It really boils down to that for me. Now that does not mean I only do things that are fun, I feel I have a duty to be a good citizen as well, I vote, I try and stay informed. I support charities.
Now it gets more complicated if you start looking at life with kids.
Once you have kids, I think life would have to change; it would be about raising your kid to be a good person, it is a huge responsibility to make sure that child is on the right path in life and will not be burden to society. That is one of the reasons I have never wanted kids. I have a lot of my dad in me. He was a ****ty father; he spent very little time with us as kids. I think I would have a hard time devoting enough time to a child to be a good dad. I get to moody and caustic without time to myself.

I believe there is.
Without this belief life has little meaning for me. That's not to say that I didn't enjoy life before I believed this, just that it all seems very pointless otherwise. Having a point and meaning are important to me, can't say why, seems to be built-in.
I'm probably not very different from you in that I don't want a sense of security in a false belief and I do continually question my beliefs. However, through faith I have experienced awareness of God. You may think me delusional but my experience is very real to me. If you want to find God you must seek him with a humble and sincere heart.

AKiron,
I am not one of those guys who is going to hold your faith agaist you.
It just is not for me. I have tried, and been forced to try at times in my life. The force part may be why it is not a path for me now(sucky Christian schools).
Furball,
That would fall under the fun catagorie.
-
GtoRA2, I was "forced to try" at times im my life too. Turned me off as well. Still, shouldn't let others misguided efforts or beliefs prevent you from seeking truth.

The meaning of life? I believe we were created by God to have a relationship with Him. And, by extension, to cultivate/nurture relationships with our fellow human beans. That's, I believe, our primary role. All else would fall into place if everyone did that.
-
The meaning of life is to create new life.

But in a Petri dish? Or does it matter. Or is this a topic for another post?
-
What does every living thing do, even those things without the intelligence to think? They create new life. THAT is the meaning of life, no need to get any deeper than that.
If the question is what is the meaning of MY life (royal my), then there is no answer other than what each individual determines for themselves. No one can give or describe an individual's life meaning for them.

Lizking
So what is your personal meaning of life?
-
To raise my children to be better than I am.
-
I agree with lizking 100%.
What else could it possibly be?
I cant see being put on earth to live then die just to have a relationship with god.

What was your meaning of life before you had kids?
-
meaning of life is life itself.
-
Screw it if it moved, drink it if it didn't.

Meaning of life... ah yes. I believe Monty Python has it all sorted out.
Society has conditioned me to do the rat race. Why do I participate? I haven't quite found the answer to that one. I do, however, like the Nihilist approach ie Big Lebowski. We could create a small controlled experiment (ie, The Giver) and develop different mini-societies of Nihilists, agnostics, religious nuts, chicken wing worshipers, etc... The world we live in is developed in such a way that it drives you to ask unanswerable questions. Pondering these questions results in the realization that there is a large rift between philosophical questions and 'the real world.' They can be melded into one and the same... the 'real' and the mystical/philosophical/spiritual. Read Quantum Psychology or Prometheus Rising by Robert Anton Wilson.
At the moment I don't think I'm in a position where I "MUST KNOW OR I WILL SLIT MY WRISTS!!" If something wants to contact me or give me a hint, by all means go for it. I'm not done exploring what's out there yet. Once I feel like it, I'll move on. Consider it a quasi-startrek-ish approach to things. Picard had it right. "We strive to bettah ourselves."
-
Short answer:
1) We're born
2) We live
3) We die
The end.
-
live life to the fullest so you don't have time to think about your imminent demise

100% agree, and the beauty of it is that it SHOULD be something that anyone can embrace, whether or not they are religious. A compatible offshoot of this might be 'to make things better then they were before', of which LizKing's statement is a concentrated form.

To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of the women!

>>What is the meaning of life? <<
Easy answer. Whatever it means to you. The hard question is "what is the reason for life." After I get through this 12 pack, I'll tell you.

It's okay... I have occasional conservative thoughts as well. ;)

I think Arnold had it a bit wrong.
I like
"To crush your enemies, see them slain before your and enjoy the ministrations of their women."
a bit better.

Meaning of life:
Eat, reproduce, drink, piss, ****. In that order.

No poop?
[edit]: 'Reproduce' would make what i originally thought the filtered word was, redundant. I now understand.[/edit]

Poop = **** = sh t.
Reproduce = f ck like rabbits.

the question only gets deeper if you smoke a doob and then ask yourself that question.
in my opinion: the meaning of life is.....to simply pass on your genes to the next generation to preserve your family lines.;)

oh yea, no offense to you holy rollers but i think god died sometime in the 80's:lol

Ya but what if you are wrong,I mean just the least little bit wrong, think about it ....eternity...what if you are wrong?

Think about it i have probably made the most realistic answer of this whole Thread. Life can never be answered. the closes we can get is we are here to be here and why we are here is irrelevant. we are just here to serve no purpose one can say.
We are the only known beings that are able to grasp the though that we are "alive". The reason for life is just beyond Human comprehension. there is no 1 answer.
-
GTO - Just read your initial post. One of the reasons we hate eachother is perhaps because we are so alike.

Oh, oh, another 1000 post thread of "You prove God doesn't exist!"/"You prove God does exist!"
Relax as that's my true belief. Doesn't mean that you're wrong, either. Can't tell you how or what you believe in, nor can you tell me.

You lucky sod
Do you do any flying out of Ardmore ?
There's a lot helo activity there these days. It's increased a lot in the last few years, I think it's mostly training flights.
I live 2kms down the road from the airport and with all the low flying helos buzzing my farm I can't do all the things that I use to be able to do ,if you know what I mean. Too many eyes in the sky.

GtoRA2, you should read "Man's Search for Meaning" by Viktor Frankl.
Personally, I think the meaning of life is to help others. We're here for the people we come in contact with (especially those we cherish), and they are here for us. A man may not be able to measurably affect the whole world, but he can affect the world of other individuals that he touches in some meaningful way. Cue the obvious Catholic priest joke.
How many people here wish they lived during WWII so they had a worthy endeavor, a noble cause to live and even risk death for?

Suburos....1000 threads...
I hope not ,I have of course particapated in some , even been the cause of some, but have come to the conclussion it is like beating your head against the wall. So unless it is hard America or military bashing I hope to let it go.
Now the GOD thing, what if there is GOD seems important some how, at least in this thread. I believe there is a GOD and you believe there isnt . I dont care any longer about proving there is one, but my mind has been working overtime on these 2 questions.
To those that dont believe or care, what is the result for you if it turns out there is one.
For me, what if there isnt one, what is the result if there isnt one, for me.
