Barton Processors run hot, at least I have heard so, so it may be a bad idea for gaming.  Dont rely on me, but Id spend a few extra bucks and get a better processor.

The 2600+ will be fine for gaming, They dont run to hot with a standard heatsink if you use it at default speed. If you wanna O/c the cpu then you should buy an after-market fan, doesnt take anythig special to keep it cool round 3200+ speeds from my experience (built around 6 Amd machines for freinds and family) you are also missing ram there less you are switching it over? i would reccomend pc3200(400mhz) if you plan to over-clock the system i prefer corsair but there are several decent brands, two sticks at the same rating will also give you an improvment over a single stick

that lil fan will be fine at normal settings its designed to run it at default, It only becomes weak when you exceed its limits which you say you will not? Sounds like a waste really, Id think you would be better of buying good case fans
*(is there much diffrence in price for 2X256 as apposed to 512?)

The 350watt should be able to carry your system ok, 520 would pretty well be over kill for the system. Perhaps you could upgrade the Psu later on id reccomend an Antec true-power 420 i think they call them, its a great Psu. As for Desk , Do you mean a computer desk if so i wouldnt buy one on-line i doubt the saving would be worth the freight component

The onboard sound I use is decent quality. It isnt inline with some of the higher end boards but using headsets does it really make that much of a difference? I would suggest to take the extra cash you were going to spend on the audio card and put that towards a nicer video board. If you are really wanting a different audio card anyhow, just upgrade the onboard audio later.

Title: AMD for gaming
Post by: CYLONN on August 29, 2004, 08:43:41 PM
AMD proccessors are great for gaming. They run a little hotter than Intel because they do twice the work at lower clock speeds, with adequate cooling, you got nothing to worry about.

I run an Athlon 2500Barton, 333 fsb. Currently set to 2.1GHz and 400fsb. Since your mb has decent on board sound, and add-on card is a waste of money. The video card isn't that hot. If you want something in the FX 5700 series, get an"ULTRA" version. Go to Newegg.com. Gainward Golden sample edition is a good buy and has great features for this line of card.  Barton 2500's are extremely over-clockable, too, so you can save some money there.  A good case to look at is the Antec Solution series at@70.00. They're specifically designed for running cool and AMD cpu's. Mine works well, it's quiet and comes with a 350W psu, which is more than enough for the components you chose.  Spend the extra money you save and get WinXP Pro w/SP1a.
Get heat sinks for your RAM...thermaltake.
Just my 2 Cents, but I speak from first-hand experience with most of these components.

ok, your wasting $55 on ANOTHER PSU when you already have one in the case, yet you wont spend 160$ on a gfx card?!?! If you save $55 on the psu, you can add that to the $105 you want to spend on gfx...what do you get? $160 :D

also, what about a XP2500 barton how much savings is that?

I dont understand why  you need a big fancy case?  Not many people are going to see it, and to make it look pretty takes extra money.  Why not get a case that has the right specs for you and doesnt have all of the extra stuff thats not necessary? You could save quite a bit of money that could be used for more memory or a better processor.

that MB has no holes around the CPU socket, which means you are stuck to pritty standard CPU coolers :(

Abit NF7-S v2.0 nForce2 or AN7

Great MB for overclocking
Very good sound on it
holes around the CPU socket ;)

NF7-S: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-127-185&depa=0

AN7: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=13-127-167&depa=0

or, you can save a few by buying a VIA chipset board like the ASUS "A7V880" VIA KT880 which is still good at overclocking.

Aaron,

I was looking at whats on your list and think I can help you. You want a cool looking PC that will handle AH2. Well your on your way with alot of the right choices. However I would change a few. Here are my suggestions

Get rid of

Aspire 520W PS..... -$55.50
Aspire Turbo Xcase -$44.99
Speakers................-$7.99
Video Card.............-$104.00

Total.......................-$214.48

Replace with

Dynapower ATX case with 420W PS......$32.00

Case (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=11-138-033&DEPA=1)

ATI 9600XT....................... ......................$ 164.00

Video Card (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-102-331&depa=1)

Total........................ ............................. + $196.00

Leaving you $18.48 To goto best buy and pick yourself out a quality headset to use in the game. If you must have the speakers add them back you still come out less. You dont really require the upgraded PS with the 430W PS that comes with the case I showed you. It should have pleanty of power to run all your accessories. And that case is very simular in looks and function to the one you have selected already, just cheaper.

This will give you what you want, a cool looking PC that will effectively run AH2 and cheaper.

The 9600XT isnt far behind the 9800 in benchmarks. For less cash you can get the 9600XT. Thats what I would stick with.

This is an old link but It has some good info on this subject.

Post by: kevykev56 on September 02, 2004, 06:50:48 PM
Yes there is a difference between the two. But from your earlier posts Aaron I was led to believe you were on a budget. If you have the dough Get the 9800Pro. Its a much better card. But if you want a good performing card at a  reasonable price the 9600xt is a good deal.

I did a search on the Sapphire cards and from what I read they seem to have good performance. My experience with the ATI boards has been good. For only $25 more from new egg you can get the ATI 9800pro. 9800pro (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=14-102-286&DEPA=1)

Just remember you said it....You get what you pay for....big time true when dealing with video cards.

Got it from the link I posted above. Out of 40 different boards the 9600xt vs the 9800pro the XT was only 8 cards behind it. Now the 9800pro is a great leap forward in technology. It performs almost twice as good as the 9600XT.

My point to Aaron was the the 9600XT will run AH2 at a very acceptable level and at a resonable price. I know lots who are using this board and have no complaints(Me).

Was just trying to help the guy save some cash. Origianlly he only wanted to spend no more than $105 on a video board. He is now looking at having a fine system and getting excellent framerates. But at a price, it has risen from the innital $650 that Aaron wanted to spend to $1000.

If ya got it spend it, cause ya shure cant take it with ya....:p
