Title: Sudgestion: Two alternatives to the bish/rook/knight setup of today.
Post by: TexMurphy on August 30, 2004, 11:55:44 AM
Hia guys.

Ive always loved the flight engine and game play of AH but the reason Ive never really gotten totally hooked (which I wana and really could get) is the bish/rook/knight setup. I know people say well go CT then. But unfortunatly I play online games to play with and against alot of people.

The thing that I dont like about the bish/rook/knight setup is that there is nothing to beeing a bish, rook or knight. There is no difference in a bish or a rook. We all fly the same planes and we all shoot the same planes. We fight a war with no "us against them" feeling what so ever.

For me it just doesnt make sence that Im flying a Yak9U and Im engaging another Yak9U and on my wing there is a 109 or a N1K. It should be me and the other Yak that shoot the 109, but ok he is a rook so Ill shoot at him.

I dont know if this is something that bugs anyone else or if its just me beeing wiered but its how I feel.

What Id like to see is either one of these two sudgestions.

Sudgestion 1

Inorder to create more of a feeling to beeing a bish, rook or knight and hence creating more feeling to the fights split the planes up between the 3 factions.

Splitting things up straight of the nation allignement while beeing what I would like... I know it cant be done because you wouldnt get a good ballance.

Also I do know that the setup now in game is to avoid the buuhuu bish are uber... nerf the bish.. whinage...

But with some thought and good heads to it Im very positive it could be done if one would divide the planes regardless of nation.

This at least for me would create the feeling that "Hey Im a bish and lets go kick these rooks". It would be so much stronger since that 190 is a rook plane and me and my Yak buddies are gonna go rip it up.

Sudgestion 2

The main reason, Im guessing, that the CT isnt nearly as popular is because players want to fly their favo planes and not be restricted by the scenario.

What I could see as an alternative to splitting things up is the following.

Every other map on MA beeing a more historical map. By more historical I mean more historicaly inspired.

For example run the England/France map but dont restrict the planes as tightly as on CT. Instead run it Axis vs Allies. The Axis side has access to all Axis planes, german, italian and jap while Allies got all allied planes.

This also creates a feeling of actually fighting for a side, which is the main issue here, but yet doesnt disable your favo planes.

Now questions to you as a MA player

Would you enjoy MA more then today with sudgestion 1 in effect? Yes or No.

Would you enjoy MA more then today with sudgestion 2 in effect? Yes or No.

Thanks for reading
Tex

bleah, no thanks to either. these suggestions are always popping up now and then - usually by a relative noob to the game. a simple research on the BBS about ideas you may have before you go thru the effort of posting them might be a good idea - for anyone, not just you.

# 1 no.

#2 thats the CT. If you don't like the way the CT is being run, get vocal in that forum.

If you can get enough people to agree with you, they will change things at least to try em.

However I wouldn't mind seeing some of the more historical maps in the main.

I just don't agree with limiting people to a side to get their plane type.

You've obviously never been a member of a tightly knit larger squadron with 20 + members each of who wants his own ride. But wants to fly with the rest of the guys.

Its been tried before & doesn't work. Period.

You can easily say that AH's main arena style of gameplay is the single most successful thus far in the history of online gameing.

Who else has 500 - 700 online per night in one place?

Think it's well proven now that around 10% of the player base want to fly in the type of arena's you are talking about. personally I find them fun , but not all the time.

Another flight sim tried it - and the 10% rule also applied , that's about what they have left of the player base they started with. There are/were other factors in their demise, but it can be partly attributed to the arena set-up.

No worries. I expected to get shot down. Hardcore vets (especially forum vets) always carry the badge "Dont touch my game".

It is human nature to always be against changes. Changes take something known and make it to something unknown. One always knows how the known thing is and works and what one thinks about it, a unknown is never easy to tell how it will work out.

Why do you think employees always get upset when there is an organization change at work? Why do you think sports players always are sceptical to new rules and new strategies deployed by coaches? Why is a break up in a relationship so hard, the loss of someone you are getting sick of or the fact that you face an unknown situation alone?

So no I dont feel bad to get shot down. ;)

Ummmm maybe so, but this is not an "unknown". It has been tryed and was a failure.
