Title: Aerobatics world championship/Swedish Airshow
Post by: Wilbus on August 31, 2004, 11:56:21 AM
Thought I'd post some pictures from a Swedish airshow that took place in the southern of sweden a couple of weeks ago. It was combined with the ending of the World Championship in aerobatics.
The 12 best aerobatic pilots flew a "free program" for teh audience, there were no scoring so they could do what they wanted, the audience then voted on the best (the one who gave the audience most plessure obviously). A swedish guy flying a Yak 55 won, followed by an American in a Pits Special.
They were both extremely good and it was a close call who won, while the Pits flew a high speed program, the Yak flew extremely slow, started out by taking of, flying in a 30 degree angle up and rolling right after takeoff combined with turning.

Anyway, here's some pictures, more coming soon.

A BIG THANKS TO HARPPA FOR PUTTING THESE FILES ON HIS WEBSPACE!!! THANKS BRO!!!

More files coming from the other airshow that took place just a few days ago, it was the anual Swedish airforce show, needless to say there was a bit more action in the form of Jets, inlcuding the old beutyfull J32 Lansen aswell as the F18 and F16 not to forget choppers, Hercules etc.

Thanks :)

I agree though, it's very anoying to watch them full size in the browser, it's better to download and take a look.

I'm sending some more pictures to Harppa now, I scaled them down to half size, should be enough :)

I'm not showing the bi-plane. The picture Furball has on his where he says "that's a tiger moth" is still a Yak on my screen, weird.

There was a Tiger Moth on the airshow aswell though.

try clearing history/deleting offline content and refreshing, that might work.

Rgr furball, just had to wait for a while, I see it now. Yes, that is a Tiger-Moth. The guy flying it has a little special act where he flies low speed past the audience and plays the trumpet (sounds awfull, luckily he flies better then he plays).

I've always loved how the Viggen and Draken just scream "I'm a cold warrior so get the hell out of the way!"  Neat planes, very muscular and business looking.  It makes the Gripen look rather feminine.

Not that there's anything wrong with that...

But...

Park a Viggen or Draken next to an F-15E and it's difficult to choose which looks more badass.  You have to park a Gripen next to an F-16 to decide which looks more feminine :)

Don't get me wrong, the Gripen is a neat airplane and has some very cool upgrades planned.  It's modern in just about every sense of the word.  It just doesn't have that big old scary "We're going to war" kind of look, thats all.  Even the F-22 has that big muscular look that tells you a whole world of hurt is on it's way.  The SU-27 looks that way too.  It's the kind of look a designer ends up with when they know they have to create a design for a war that could involve anything from a sterile high-altitude intercept to a world of glowing thermonuclear hurt raining down on someone.  The Gripen...  Well, it seems like that's for a kinder gentler sort of war I guess.

I'm sure it could carry a can of sunshine if necessary, but it doesn't look the part like the Viggen and Draken do.

Yea, the A-10 is another favorite.  All the appeal of a folding pack shovel (er... entrenching tool), built to do a dirty job under the worst possible circumstances, and survive to do it again the next day.  Ugly as heck but oh so functionally elegant.

It's nice that the Viggen looks both beautiful AND badass :)

*thread hijack alert*

BTW, I'm convinced that part of the reason Boeing's JSF entry wasn't chosen is because that plane was far too ugly to fly.  That thing looked like an aborted whale fetus.  Usually an ugly piece of military hardware was driven to that condition by an extreme design requirement, but the Boeing JSF had no good reason for looking so ugly.  Regardless of how it would have performed, pilots and maintainers alike would have cringed every time they so much as glanced in it's general direction.

There was a whole generation of British planes that were the same...  The brits seem to tread on the fine line between elegant beauty and picasso-like horror every time they design an aircraft.  Thank goodness they're buying the eurofighter next, but even that looks a bit like a tonka-truck with wings.  It's too bad they couldn't combine the spitfire with the concorde to come up with another beautful world-beating fighter.  Maybe sometime in the next milennium.

The gripen and rafale...  Works of art.  I'm not convinced that they're not steps backwards in some important areas, but they're near the apex of elegant non-stealthy fighter aircraft design.

Draken, Viggen, Jas and Mirage 3 to 2000 are among the most beautiful jets ever made.

The lightning for example.  Who stacks engines on top of each other?  Sure it was fast as hell, but man was it smurfy.  There were another dozen earlier planes that looked like pregnant fish too...  I don't have my aircraft encyclopedia handy and I've deliberately wiped such unfortunate design mishaps from my memory, but I've been shocked far too often by brit aircraft designs to easily forget them all.  I think it's mostly out of their system now or all those designers have retired or perished, but it's been a while since a true all-British fighter design has flown.

I think the lightning is a nice looking plane?  Ever seen a real one? its massive, really imposing.  Guess one of those designs you love or hate, kinda like its namesake the P-38.

Yup, the Viggen and Draken sure as hell look more manly then the Gripen, problem is, they are also more clumpsy. I got the chans to talk to a Gripen pilot who had also flown a couple of years in the Viggen, asked him which one he prefered. I quite clearly stated that the Gripen was by far the better plane. It is MUCH smaller and thus much more maneuverable, it can carry the same load etc etc.

Viggem and Draken still win the bad a** competition though.

Will post some more screens from the new airshow soon, will post in another thread.

Ps. Punk Hijackers :p
