"I don't think you can win it," he replied. "But I think you can create conditions so that those who use terror as a tool are less acceptable in parts of the world."

This strikes me as one of the most truthful statements on the war so far. Too bad he took it back.

What can, and will be 'won' is the war against those who champion that idea and the infrastructure that supports it.

So yeah... its a reach.  The desperation is kinda funny, though.

Yeah, but for anyone in Kerry's camp to say Bush has a defeatist attitude, based on a minor slip up like that, is absurd when you look at the commitment to fighting terrorism Bush has displayed.

Except for that little detour in Iraq, I might agree. ;)

As a quote from one of my other entries:

The Kerry campaign and the Left in general just peed in the political light socket. America has enough sense to know that this quote WAS taken out of context, and Kerry is going to be very surprised when his numbers drop because he criticized Bush. This will hurt him bad.

The RIGHT thing to do would be to say, "I understand the remarks that President Bush made can be taken out of context, and the media should produce the whole story. (Then fire back) I feel president Bush's pain because many of my remarks have been misinterpreted as flip-flopping."

BAM. Even if he throws out a lie, he can actually turn this misstatement by Bush into a lovely simpathy campaign, getting him votes. But thats not how Democrats run a campaign i guess...

I have to agree with Bush whole heartedly.  I think what he meant is that you will never have a formal victory like we did in most other wars.  You can win the "war on terror" as you go but I don't think terrorists in general will ever surrender.

This was probably braught on by the BS the left is spewing that we are "loseing" the war on terror.  Anyone who says that needs to check facts.

One thing I will majorly fault Bush is that he never persuaded congress to formally declare war.  Even if they never really have a nation to declare it on a formal declaration would go a long ways to solve many of the problems related with the current court battles dealing w/ terrorists themselves.  For some reason this is important to me and makes this more than just a "police action" like past wars.

It kinda seems that some of you on this thread are gleeful that the war on terrorism cant be won in the sense of ww2. Why?
And does this mean we should not fight it?

Just for the record I knew what he meant, it was not a flip flop, never the less the waffles looked good.

Bush's flip-flopping is a complete non-issue.

he's very thoroughly laid the ground work for blanket deny-ability.

anything he says that ends up coming back to bite him, he just claims he didn't know what he was saying.  I doubt anyone would have a problem believing that.
