Title: How Viginia bleeds it's population into poverty
Post by: Coolridr on September 01, 2004, 05:30:30 PM
Having not grown up here I'm not used to this sort of state government...

Taxes:

-State Income Tax
-Sales tax (just raised as of today)
-Personal Property Tax (car)
-City parking decals (another tax)
-Unprepared food tax
-prepared food tax
-Tobacco tax raised to 20 cents per pack
-State Vehicle inspection (a cover for more revenue)
-They even charge farmers for the rain
The list goes on and on

This goes into effect today..AFTER THEY FOUND THEY ALREADY HAD A BUDGET SURPLUS!!

The car tax is BS..you pay it EVERY year after you already paid sales tax on it..

I propose a petition to remove Virginia from the Union as this place does not deserve to be a member of this great nation.

Here's my list of reasons.

The weather here sux...rains sooo much..overcast ALOT

Opressive taxes

They make you put a lisence plare on the front of your car ruining it's looks.

They refuse to fix their highways.

They are all about making money for businesses..the consumers are all victims here (example no limit on the amount of interest that can be charged)

They don't appreciate the military that supports this state financially.

Speed limits are too low

They think they have the right to outlaw radar detectors

Brutal Police forces

Overzealous state troopers( another money maker)

Poor education system

Outlawing freedom of speech in the Va Beach resort area.

An ineffective "General Assembly" (Their form of state goverment that didn't pass a budget until late in the year)

Shady judges in the courts

"Boss Hogg" style political machine

Too restrictive Alcohol sales laws (Only buy Liquor at state run stores{sounds like the Soviet Union to me} and no alcohol after midnight 7 days a week)

Hampton Roads is a war zone the coutry could do without.

I'm sure I can go on and on...but I think this is enough for now.

KICK VIRGINIA OUT

To modify their tourist ads

"Virginia is for loSers"

I had to go to Virginia for an entire year before I could truly appreciate the desert. :)

Its rained over at my place maybe, MAYBE, once a week.  The rest is sunny and around 85-90 in summer.

They don't appreciate the military that supports this state financially.

What do you mean by this?  Theres a great appreciation for the military around here.
Quote
They think they have the right to outlaw radar detectors

They wont stop you over if you have one...
Quote
Overzealous state troopers( another money maker)

There are 3 state troopers living on my street alone, and none of them seem out of hand.
Quote
Poor education system

Its not so much a poor education system, its just that the school board doesnt want to spend money to make it better.
Quote
Shady judges in the courts

Isnt this the case with every state?
Quote
Brutal Police forces

What? I've never seen, heard, or witnessed any brutality among the police force except for two incidents, and they were on the other side of the state from me.
Quote
Hampton Roads is a war zone the coutry could do without.

Never been there.

You can buy alcohol at just about any store.  You just cant buy hard liquor such as vodka or rum outside of a state store.  Besides, theres always an ABC store never more than 30 minutes from any place.

I love Virginia.  Yes, the taxes are fairly high, but if thats all you've been paying, you dont know what you could be getting. ;)

We've got great tourist attractions, wonderful scenery, and the weather is stretched.  So, if you enjoy summer and winter, you get a little bit of both.  Summer is around 90 degrees and sunny (of course) and in winter its usually 30-40 with snow 2-3 times a month.

What part of Virginia did you go through to think of all these things?

Ive never spent much time out there.  I avoid all that mess because yes, it is a living ****hole.  If you go further east out to Daleville and Botetourt, its a lot better and the police force is a lot less strict.

Weather were I live is good.

2. Opressive taxes

Agreed

3. They make you put a lisence plare on the front of your car ruining it's looks.

Nope, only have one on the back. Some counties do require it though...

4. They refuse to fix their highways.

Adding more lanes and repaving I-81

5. They are all about making money for businesses..the consumers are all victims here (example no limit on the amount of interest that can be charged)

Agreed

They don't appreciate the military that supports this state financially.

Why are you a hurry? We have oen of the best traffic records in the USA. I wonder why?

Shady judges in the courts.

Umm.. this isn't jsut a VA problem/

"Boss Hogg" style political machine

Umm. ok

Too restrictive Alcohol sales laws (Only buy Liquor at state run stores{sounds like the Soviet Union to me} and no alcohol after midnight 7 days a week)

Again thats up to your county.

Hampton Roads is a war zone the coutry could do without.

Yep

I'm sure I can go on and on...but I think this is enough for now.

I remember when I was young living there, and driving by that big fancy building of the Christian Broadcasting Network, Now we all know where that collection plate money went ;)

I liked living there, although I was little. Lots of Navy Aircraft over head F-14's and A-6's, Driving past the Shipyards and going through the tunnel.

My favorite Virginia story....

My Uncle was returning from dropping his daughter off at the University of Tennessee, and was driving on I-77 when a state trooper pulled him over. The conversation went like this....

Trooper-"Mr.Ross,I pulled you over for speeding. Were you aware of how fast you were going?

My uncle-"No sir,I wasn't."

Trooper, with a look of disbelief and disgust-"Mr.Ross,I clocked you at 94 MILES AN HOUR.How can you possibly sit there and try to tell me you had no idea how fast you were going?"

My uncle-"The speedometer only goes to 85."

My sister live in Va so I go there a bunch of times.
Nice state. No real complaints other then You gotta pump your own Gas and you have to search for an ABS store if you want hard stuff.
They do seem to be a bit Taxy though taxing just about everything in sight.

I have seen some things in Va that I've never witnessed anywhere else though.

For example it is the only state Ive ever been in where drivers ride their brakes,, Going UP hill.

They also have announced in the media(traffic reports) traffic delays
Because of the sun.
Evidently folks there havent figured out what the visor is for yet LOL

But other then those minor things I think its a pretty good state and has its plus's and minuses just like anywhere else.

Talking about traffic...After the short times that it doesn't rain...as soon as it starts to drizzle again..BAM BAM BAM.accident after accident. When it starts to rain don't paln on getting anywhere fast. You'd think that with all the wet road experience these people should have there should be no problem. And forget it in the winter when it snows.

Heh I was a contractor there for 10 yrs--lived out at Chick's Beach near Lynnhaven Inlet--had to goto CINC/SACLANT compound & NARDAC (NAVDAC now I think) daily with trips to Langley and NASA thrown in and an occasional run to Dam Neck (there was a whole tempested BUILDING there).

You are absolutely right about the traffic. The tunnel was mindless in the afternoon. And hot? Try it in a 3 piece suit. The great thing tho was going home to a place on the bay and fishin for flounder for dinner....or to the Duck Inn on the gazebo for drinks...

Still and all it was better than Fairfax County (McLean). Talk about taxed to death.

Rain to drivers in the DC area is like a liquid full frontal lobotamy. You could leave your office at 8PM and still get stuck in traffic.

You think Virignia is bad? Move to Prince George's County Maryland.

Higher Taxes, worse roads, much much worse schools (well, compared to Norther Virginia anyhow).

Fairfax County Virginia is paradice on Earth compared to the PGC, although I wound't choose to live anywhere near here if I had a better choice.

Much of our trafic reports come out of NY

I've never heard a sun glare delay.

LOL round here you lallygag on the road due to sun during rush hour your more then likely to hear horns honking and people saying not so nice things about you, your car your family and just about anything else about you often with extreme vulgarity and all in the same sentance.

And THATS just what you will hear from the retired silver haired old ladies LOL

Why dont you folks who live around DC in PG  and Fairfax county, move to the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, Harpers Ferry, Shepherdstown (My Old Stomping Ground), Charlestown, Thats all in in Jefferson County WV, no more than an Hour Drive to DC, Short Train Ride to DC stops near every place I mentioned, although the rails end in Martinsburg.

Homes are starting to get expensive thier though, Everybody who moved here in the late 90's is either from Maryland Virginia or DC. I moved there in 91, and saw Jefferson county explode with new housing, And from this boost Jefferson County is the wealthiest county in West Virginia, even beating the capital, Charleston. Everybody realised they could beat the taxes by moving here.

Did you hear about the fire at the West Virginia Governer's Mansion? Burned it all the way down to the wheels it did.

But honestly, my commute is bad enough as it is, living in Fairfax and Working/going to school downtown. This was as far west as I felt I could go.

What a troll thread.  Virginia IS for lovers -- of the greenest state  with the best climate in the nation (long spring and fall, pleasant summer, brief winter).  Was one of largest states before West Virginia split away in Civil War.

Tough on crime, good to its citizens, represents the best of South and North, historic heart of the nation, but yes, getting expensive and clogged with traffic, especially Northern Virginia.

We've considered retirement spots all over the nation, but still can't find anywhere better than Virginia.  If, considering all factors (research, not just opinion), you know a better place to live, be a kind soul and share it.

Compared to other areas, Virginia usually experiences only hurricane remnants, few tornados, few floods, virtually no earthquakes, few fires, few pests, excellent balance of moisture and sun, and winter just long enough to kill off the worst bugs.

In Northern Virginia you're close to everything (mountains, seashore, big cities, small towns, gorgeous rolling country) but far enough away too.

Unfortunately, if you choose to join us, bring a fat wallet.  Cost of living is not the highest but not the lowest either, and it just keeps increasing, particularly housing prices.

New Joisey While has on average the highest income in the nation is also among, if not the most expencive states to live.

Example. I have a simple 3 bedroom ranch.

My sister lives just outside of Richmand and recently had a brand new house built well over twice the size of mine on roughly the same landspace for  just over 1/4 of what my  40 year old house would cost to buy right now.

So it couldnt be worse LOL
