I have been toying with the idea of building my own.
I can order a Les Baer frame and slide from Brownells for 575$ It is fitted alread for fitted for the barrel from nowlin or Baer.
I have a fairly decent set of Pistol smithing tools, and have no problems buying more.
Is this a relitivly easy thing to do? Anyone know of a good book on it?
The frame is set up for a ramped barrel and pre cut for the beaver tail grip safety.
For 225 more you can get the slide cut for novak or bomar sites, and the slide comes fitted to the frame.
I know this would be more pricey then just buying a kimber, but this would be a fun gun plus a learning experiance.

I have no experience building them, but I would say not to use it for defense. Unless I was an expert gunsmith, I wouldn't trust anything I made when my life counted on it.

OK......
AMI I think. American Gunsmiting Institute.
Try a look up on the web. Just lost my system and had to partition and format everything :(
Anyways... they got a VHS and/or possibly a DVD of a complete custom 1911 build.
Tells you everything you have to do and why.
Hope that helps. Doing a look up now myself. If I can refind it I'll post it here.

OOPS not AMI is AGI here it is :)

I tuned a basic GI hardballer into a very accurate pistol.

Thanks for the info guys.
This would be a fun gun.
I have my Sig 220 for defensive needs.

Sig 220 for defensive needs.
Defense from what? You live in Iraq or something?
-
No, I have no need for it now, it stays locked up, more along the lines of needed something for defense like if ******* drug dealers move in next door.
That was the case when I bought it. Still, better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it I always say.
Edit, PS what banned person are you?
-
"Defense from what? You live in Iraq or something?"
That comming from the guy who lists himself as living in Detroit. Iraq would probably be safer :)

Geez, if I had the choice between a sig and the 1911 I made, I'd choose the 1911 I'd made. Even if I used rocks to make it.
-
Gues you have never owned a Sig.
I have owned a Sig and several 1911, I am not sure I would trust any of the 1911a I own.
The Sig 220 has over 5000 rounds through it and I have never had a single problem with it.
