ahhhh yes P-38 is a real killer if flown correctly. One of the best vert. fighters around and such a pleasure to beat an enemy that underestimates the huge fighters agility!Looking forward to this one myself.

Central, I was there the day the C.A.F. decided to depart Breckenridge in that P-38 with 2 rough running engines  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)  A real stroke of genius to add to their long list of losses.  It happened no more than 2 months after a 15 year restoration of the plane.

All weekend they were tuning on that plane trying to get her to run correctly.  I have video tape of the run-up.  I swear they never got over 1400rpm due to all the poping & backfiring.  Still they pressed on and decided to fly the plane elsewhere to receive maintenance.  Kind of a paradox eh?

Well, they got a few miles South of Breckenridge Airport and had to belly-land her in the brambles of Central Texas.  Today they are restoring the plane (again), this time as a P-38 night fighter.  Of course they are raping the only REAL P-38 night fighter left in existence to get all the parts necessary for the restoration.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)

I'm just hoping to God they have a bit more sense next time around.  The P-38 has to be the most complex WWII fighter there is and here these guys are flying it with rough engines right after a 15 year restoration!  I'm crossing my fingers hoping they don't also destroy the only surviving patterns for the P-38 night-fighter radome & rear cockpit structures.

This is not a bash against the C.A.F. in general - only the folks who a foolish enough to make desperate decisions that put ultra-rare aircraft in danger unnecessarily.

What da heck is that picture of??

A botched attempt at copying a P-38?

LOL. Would you get a load of that horizontal stab & elevator.  Looks a bit off center wouldn't you say? heeheehee

floo's strange airplane is a Blohm und Voss BV 141. It was a prototype for a short distance observation type with light ground attack ability. As the picture shows BuV optimized it for visibilty with the asymetric design. First flown in 1938 it was reputed to an acceptable flyer but the LW preferred the more conventional FW 189. The offset stabilizer was an attempt at giving the rear gunner a better field of fire. Plans for production were shelved in 1940. Its a prime exception to the old engineering rule of thumb of "if it looks right, it'll be right" and proves , once again , that sucessful flight only requires that the *forces* involved be in balance.

I doubt if you'll ever see anything like this in any online sim unless its a user created hobby piece since it would be meat on the table for just about any WW2 fighter you could name.

So true Windle, but still it wouldnt be that hard to design for a sim. You wouldnt have to jump into a B17 or real bomber for that case just to bomb things. Atleast you could stick around for the CAP! :-D

Come on, what other type of plane do you get the best of both worlds (realfighter\norden bomber)? Lets just pretend it worked, Hitech, whens it going in? :-)

All seriousness aside, it would have been nice to see it work for them. And for them to use and dismantle parts of an existing/working p38, thats ashame.

Thanks for the added info Windle.
