Title: Vsynch Application Controlled OK?
Post by: Halo on September 03, 2004, 11:47:26 AM
Although related threads have it made it clear vsynch generally should be turned On, I'm confused by the third option of Application Controlled.

It suggests some programs run better with vsynch Off and some with vsynch On, and various applications determine which is best and turn vsynch On or Off.

Which brings three questions:

1.  Regarding Aces High play, is it better to leave the vsynch set to Application Controlled or should it be turned On?

2.  How does Aces High handle this Application Controlled option -- does Aces High turn it On while people are playing Aces High?

3.  Because my NVidia defaults to Application Controlled, that is where Ive left it.  Is there any reason to turn it to On for Aces High or anything else?

"Application Controlled" simply means the application controls it.  If the application does not mess with it, then it runs at some default the video card manufacturer has set.

WHQL drivers should have it defaulted to enabled as that is required by Microsoft.

However, most NVidia drivers will not pass WHQL certification, so they may disable vsync.
ATI's released drivers are all WHQL certified, so they probably enable vsync by default.

Thanks, Skuzzy.

Therefore, it appears:

1.  For Aces High, NVidia vsynch should be turned On and not left as Application Controlled.

2.  Aces High does not mess with vsynch Application Controlled.

3.  I should turn on my NVidia vsynch and leave it On for all applications including Aces High.

On it is.
