Title: Converting terrains from AH Classic to AH2
Post by: bbosen on September 07, 2004, 10:13:52 PM
The transition to AH2 has been rough on me and my equipment, but I've not got ONE of my three machines running it adequately.

Is there some automated or semiautomated way to convert AH classic terrains for use in AH2?

yes, but there is no way to convert if the objects are custom.

Any terrain can be converted, but only by the person who made it.

I opened my old FinRus with the new TE and it worked very good. These things opened or were left:

-Coastlines
-Elevations
-Texture's placing
-Roads, railways and rivers
-CBM

And nothing more, but I knew it. I have just placed all the new airfields , factories etc. but it's very quickly to operate with the new TE, I like it!:)

Custom things are transfered.... just as default things though. so if you have a customized airfield, it will transfer as the default airfield.
Open AH2 TE
click File -> Convert Terrain
select the .OBA file of your map (if you just do the .oba everything else will convert at once)

only problem I have encountered is the maproom turns into a town and is located on top of the airfield.

I have been Converting My old AH1 Maps and all of My Airfields are there.
The Maprooms turn into small towns on top of the Airfields and need to be deleated.
Then the Maproom and Tower for each Airfield needs to be added.
The Maproom will Default to the Center of the Airfield Runway but you can move it off center away from the Runway and the visible portion of the maproom will stay where you place it.
I usually put them just a little to the right of the runway in the grass.
To add a Tower I pick a spot offcenter of the runway and place a ENTPNT object and call the object type "tower"
These seem to work good.

P.S. For Building New Maps I find it easier to build the terrain in TE1 then convert it into a AH2 Map and make the corrections.
This helps get around the Clipboard map problem.
ie. BLUE bmp.

Good Luck Pbdy :aok

OK. Thanks for your help everybody. I got the new TE and I was able to convert my Solomon Islands map. For starters, I just let the automagic conversion control everything and I ended up with a flyable map, but there were several minor problems (towns overlaid on top of airfields, etc.)

I got most of those problems fixed, but I'm still struggling with one:

All of the large airstrips have a BUNKER right smack dab in the middle of them! Right where two airstrips intersect! I can't figure out how to delete that shape.

Has anybody else encountered and/or overcome this?

Thats a maproom, you can move it off the runway, just don't move it too much. It will apear to snap back to center but when you build the map it will be where you moved it.

AHHhhhh.....

thanks Zmeg! Because it seemed to "snap back to the center of the runway" I never considered that possibility. I'll give it a try.
