I applaud the guys quoted in the story for learning english on his own and taking the litercay classes. Good for him, thats a classic American immigrant story.

However I hold the most unpleasent hateful ill will towards the left wing morons, mexican illegal immigration apologits, usa hating la raza racists, teachers unions, left wing chicano politicians, et cetera for ever imposing and still fighting to maintain the ignorant evil of biliungual education on the state of califirnia. This is a process that trades a childs future for some bizzare notion of cultural self esteem and, of course, to satisfy the whims of the grups mentined above.

So in clonclusion:

IF YOU WANT TO LIVE AND WORK IN AMERICA LEARN TO SPEAK, READ AND WRITE Golly-geeNED ENGLIGH!!!

As an immigrant myself trust me when I say that its not hard at all to learn basic english - for everyone - and especially so for younger people...

Continued immigration and a stubborn high school dropout rate have stymied efforts to improve literacy in Los Angeles County.

What has high school dropout rate to do with literacy?

It was HT that changed the name "Log In" to "login".  The rest of the world adapted..

The last available national study was conducted in 1992 by the National Adult Literacy Survey, which found that 48 percent of the nation's working-age population was functionally illiterate.

We're a nation of idiots.

The federal government controls all immigration policies.   This illegal alien mess is just another way that Washington screws California.

As an immigrant I agree.

My parents spoke ZERO english when they came here in '98.

By 2000 they had a working english.. of course the accent was heavy some grammatical mistakes and some words they didnt know plus some bad spelling mistakes...but they could certainly keep up and participate in a verbal discussion no problem.

And we talking about 50+ year old adults.

In my own job ive encountered people who have lived here for decades and dont speak english...yet they furiously lobby and complain why the goverment doesn't adapt to THEIR needs. all i can think of is 'wtf?!!'

That is royally messed up. Imo every immigrant should get an english test every 5 years. No pass, revoke greencard or citizenship and ship em out. Theres a lot of good people waiting for the chance to immigrate to the USA and no country needs freeloading parasites who cant learn the basics of the language of the country they reside in.

Its insulting and embarrasing.
