Title: Can you read these markings?
Post by: United on September 11, 2004, 07:00:32 PM
I have this profile picture of a model Spitfire, but I cant read the following:

The Identification number, what I can tell it is BMI ?76.

The tail lettering.  Its written in Russian, but I think the first word is CMEPTO, or at least in english thats what it looks like.

Any help much appreciated!
WHoops, forgot picture

Can't even see the picture :)

Spit Vs with BM coded serials that were transfered to Russia were:

154, 185-185, 189, 270, 359, 365, 371-372, 460, 462, 520 & 595.

Take your pick :)

Hehe, thanks Guppy.

Im still not so sure any of those numbers match. Perhaps this modeller put on a random number?

Oh well, hopefully the picture (:D) helps to identify more.

Yep, he appears to have faked it cause he gave the serial too many letters and numbers.

The Russians didn't get Spit Is or IIs either which is what the model appears to be since it has the A wing and the blunt prop that was used on many of the Spit II, although the exhaust for the engine seem to be later Spit V type fishtail exhausts.

Guess it's a mix and match Spit I,II,Va :)

Well, I found this picture of supposedly the same bird, but labeled as a Spit II unlike the other.  Im not sure which is correct.

The key here is that there were no Spit Is or IIs sent to Russia.  Some beaten up Spit Vbs were the first to go.

Not sure what that guy was modeling then

These two images might help.  Note the stars on top of the wings too.
