Title: Aces High Callsigns - Real Websites
Post by: Creamo on February 15, 2001, 02:52:00 AM
I always thought it was interesting how people choose their callsigns for AH, or any online sim for that matter. But those BBS threads have been done.

What I was wondering was what your individual callsign as a website would be.
So, in-between broke planes today, I logged onto the internet at work and tried something.

I chose a HTC employee callsign to see what the corresponding website would be.

Obviously www.hitech.com (http://www.hitech.com)  was sure to be a tech company and it was. So I tried www.NATEDOG.com. (http://www.NATEDOG.com.)  Interestingly, it was indeed a real website.

NATEDOG (http://www.natedog.com)

Oooo, is that guy interesting or what?
I am NOT Natedog(sp?) the rapper... My name is Nathan Kiewel and I live in Hutchinson, MN heh, that's some funny toejam.

Then I tried just some random buffoon I see in RW everyone and a while. Check this out-

FUNKEDUP (http://www.funked.com)

heh..... D.I.L.D.O.!

Of course I tried my own callsign -

CREAMO (http://www.creamo.com)

Whoah- That's a great website if I do say so myself.

Then I just chose a random poster from the BBS. This was very interesting.

THEWOBBLE (http://www.tards.com)

Ahhh, how appropriate!       (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Hey, try your own,it's fun.

...and for God's sake pick on a whiner today.

Tried www.nash.com (http://www.nash.com)

Came up with nothing... which is appropriate I guess as I picked this handle as a laff out of thin air when I stumbled upon online flight sims a bunch of years back - and wanted something kitschy... suitably fighter jockish sounding. Nash.... Gnash... Grrrrowl.....

My handle is a web development company....

Hmm, ironic ain't it. I do AH training in H2H, I'm writing an AH online manual, I run a training site. Seems fitting huh.

Frenchy.com --> Nothing

Frenchy.org --> A canadian teen who things that he is Frenchy when he definitly acts as an American. (And no French people don't dance at raves with glow sticks... pfeuuuf freacks).

Frenchy.net --> A web designer page, not bad. Not sure the guy is french either. "frenchy" must be a selling argument, like French Vanella, French Fries, French top, French whatever.

You want to kill someone? Go in france and ask for a French whatever ... the guy will die laughting at you.

It appears to be a service that assists in finding research on the internet.  At least they got the name from the same place I did: the Ancient Egyptian complex at Karnak.

EDIT: On further review, it seems to be a search engine that is supposed to produce focused, good results.  No bad links or junk pages.

I can't figure out what this guys is doing except posting comments each day and linking to other sites.

Example posts:
Respect as a Contested Concept - Today at 10:05 am

Last year in George Lakoff's course on Language and the Mind, one of the topics we covered was the contested concept. Briefly, a contested concept is a term which means different things to different people, like 'art,' or 'feminism,' or 'government.'

I've been thinking about contested concepts a bit more lately, specifically in the context of the final paper I wrote for the class, examining ways to scientifically map and cluster people's varying views of these concepts, and seeing how these views relate to demographic, geographic, or even temporal variables.

Yesterday I was thinking about the term 'respect' and I was wondering what your views of the term are. This is just a brief study to see if respect is a good candidate for mapping.

So, if you're bored at work, home, or class, and you're at all interested, I'd love it if you would just jot down a few sentences on what respect means to you, just the essence of the term. I'll summarize the results (no names attached) and post them in a couple days. I'll also post the paper, if anyone's interested, as a real study of the contested concept might be the next step.

So if you're up for it, send your response to me at hello@fury.com. Thanks!

Presentations sans Laptop - Yesterday at 12:40 pm

A company called Margi Systems just announced 'Presenter-to-Go', a Springboard module for the Visor, that lets you 'print-to-PDA' a Powerpoint presentation as a series of static slides, then take the PDA with you and plug it into a Barco or other projector or TV for remote presentations without the computer.

Cool idea, but I've been exporting slides to JPEG files, then uploading them to my Digital ELPH and using its video-out port to drive presentations. It's not made for it, butit works pretty well, and you can fit about a thousand slides on a 32meg card. Another advantage of this way is that you can easily go over your presentation (or show it to someone else) on the train or in the car using the camera's built-in screen.

I'd use it for the presentation I'm giving for Yahoo next week, but I'll need direct internet access. Still, an extra 8 or 16 meg compactflash card is just the thing to keep a digital wallet of pictures, presentations, or whatever, letting you use your digital camera as more than just a capture tool.

Valentine's day? Move along. Nothing to see here. - Wednesday, Feb 14 at 6:14 pm

Sorry, no cute pink color scheme or gushing love letters from me this Valentine's Day. But I love all my readers, and since I know you love me too, I bought myself a long-stemmed rose on your behalf.

Thanks!

I invented the Internet - Tuesday, Feb 13 at 7:03 pm

Okay, a lot of friends have pushed me into brushing the dust off this one and putting it online.

The short version: About twelve years ago I submitted an essay to a contest, predicting what computers would be like in the year 2000. Bill Gates was one of the final judges.
