Title: leaving for Germany tomorrow
Post by: Modas on September 14, 2004, 02:42:23 PM
Hey Hey -

I'm leaving for Germany (Munich) tommorow for Octoberfest.  Hmmmmmmm...

Beerrrr......

I've got one question for all you world travelers out there.  How does one go about not totally looking like a tourist?  Obviously, I'm going to have a camera with me most of the time.  The camera is to big to fit into a pocket.  I don't want to keep it out in the open.

Any suggestions or am I just paranoid?

Don't shower or shave for a few days.

Throw a handful of beer in your hair and give it a quick brush. Then shake your head a few times to get the right "look".

Wear dark double knit slacks and a brown or grey sportcoat. Don't wear jeans or fancy suits. Look a bit "tacky"

Wear your shirt and jacket open at all times.

Try not to speak English in hearing of others (whisper alot).

Try not to wave your passport around and keep the carry luggage to a bare minimum.

Try not to make too much eye contact or gawk at everything as if you've never seen it before.

Don't be overly rude but don't be overly happy and pleasant either. No smiling, laughing, partying...don't get drunk.

Do everything the police or customs agents say immediately.
Especially if they yell HALT! (the next thing you'll hear is dogs or bullets)

If you get into a fight with a German, don't worry, you'll win easily.

You can do all the American things at the festival.
Try to blend in at all other times.

Don't be rude and you will do just fine.

-edit- one more thing: Dont run around drunk screaming "four more years" wearing a cowboyhat and boots. Someone may try to find out if one of those big beer glasses fits your head like your hat does :D

Modas....

It's not that big of a deal, Munich is well suited to the "Travellers" and they treat tourists very well.  I was there in June and had a great time, went to the Hofbrauhaus but that place was packed and we could not get a seat for all of us.  Lot's of great places there to enjoy the beer, make sure you try all the different types.  Lot's of Pil's, White beer (made with wheat) and Dunkel (dark beer).  Eat a local resturants and enjoy the bratwurst, currywurst and all the rest.  There is a Hard Rock Cafe if you feel you need some American style food, its right across from the Hofbrauhaus.  Have a great time and remember "It's not better or worse, it's different".  Enjoy...essen Sie gut

I have a feeling you'll fit in just fine. Munich will be full of tourists anyway. In my experience Germans look like Americans. As an English speaker I'm often mistaken for British or American, it's no big deal. I doubt if Munich is much of a crime hotbed against tourists.

But one warning the beer is very strong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Find a restaurant where they just nod "yes" when you say

"Schweinehaxe, Rotkraut, bier"

Eat and drink until you're stuffed. You'll thank me.  ;)

Actually people from Münich don't use 'Guten Tag' but 'Grüss Gott' instead; Bavarian dialect is slightly different to northern German.

You have to remember that Oktoberfest is a huge festival so there will be thousands of tourists there so I really can't see any problem settling in.  I actually got mistaken for a German on a few occasions last time I was there earlier in the year (probably the suede leather jacket I was wearing ;)) Oh, virtually everyone speaks German anyway...

I'm actually moving to Münich on the 15th October, sadly missing the Oktoberfest :(

There's a little 'farmers market' with a ****load of fresh food, veggies, and whatever you want... I think it's a half mile from the Marianplatz.

If the Deutches Museum that GhostFT mentions is the place with an Me262 and Me163, then I second his recommendation.  Huge place, TONS of stuff.  Bring a camera =]

thanks for the suggestions guys!!

I'm sure its gonna be a blast.  I've got enough memory card for my camera to take about 800 pictures before I have to download to a computer.

I'll post some of the good ones when I get back.

I'm starting to drool now just thinking of all the beer......

 :D

CYA in a couple of weeks!!!
