Title: Raise your right hand, and repeat after me
Post by: Wanker on September 15, 2004, 08:23:10 AM
"I, ___________, pledge to contain my comments on the upcoming presidential election to the issues that will affect the United States of America in the next four years. I recognize that my comments, no matter how eloquent or logical, will probably never change the opinions of the extremists from both sides, but that a good old debate never hurt anyone. Therefore, I will restrict my debate with said extremists to one of the current issues at hand, and the issues that may arise in the next four years, and attempt to show them the errors of their candidate's ways.

I refuse to discuss things that happened thirty to forty years ago, and will endeavor to refrain from making personal attacks against either candidate. Instead, I pledge to focus on the decisions said candidate could potentially make in the future, based soley on their decisions and actions within the timeframe of the last presidential election and the present day. I pledge to refrain from personal attacks against fellow debaters on this bulletin board, even though they are wrong and I am right.

I pledge to abide by these rules until the day after the election, so help me ."

So you guys would rather continue reading the same personal attacks and trash talk every day?

Rise above that, and say the pledge. Take the high road, if you dare!

I'm not sure about you, but I discuss the issues and bring facts and data to the table. I receive quit a bit of trash talk.

It's hard to have a substantive discussion about Kerry's views on the big issues because he keeps changing them.  What would he have done with Iraq?  What would he do now?  Nobody knows except his pollsters.

No, it's not a cop out.

We all like to discuss current affairs; it's what we do here in the O-Club.

To restrict comment on "what's hot" like this potentially forged documentation on Bush by CBS would kill all the fun.

I mean, really... if it's shown that CBS/Rather faked all this in colllusion with the Kerry campaign.... you don't want anyone to talk about it? Impossible; I sure couldn't keep that pledge.

Now, if you'll review what I've posted here, I'm in agreement with you that the true concerns of this election are rarely if ever addressed. I'd love to see more discussion on that stuff.

Yay! Now, there's two brave souls. C'mon now. You sir... and you. Step right up and take the pledge!

Toad, the document itself is not current, but if CBS faked it, that *is* current, so it would fit within the criteria of the pledge, technically.

But do we really want to focus on the past? I thought everyone wanted to think ahead to the future? That's what the pledge is all about. What's going to happen now and in the future.

So......step right up, young Toad with the long silver hair. :D

I would sign the pledge too if my party had been duped by michell moore and cbs forgeries and phony cambodia excursions and alliances with jane fonda and the brady bunch...

sorta like.... ok... nobody bought the lies so lets not discuss the morality behind all the lies.

banana, I agree with you, but I really think this should
be a document more suited for the CANDIDATES to live by.
Send it to Washington..maybe a bill can be passed requiring
candidates to sign and notarize :)

How about a pledge where anyone who doesn't vote in the upcoming election is not allowed to discuss politics on this board for the next 4 years?

I wish the two candidates would pledge to refrain from using the following words/phrases for the TV debate.

1:Vietnam
2:National Guard
3:Flip Flop
4:Cocaine

Personally I like to hear from people outside the U.S. It solidifies my stance and constantly proves to us why we should NOT be like Canada or Europia.

Rip,

I was actually referring to Americans who don't vote but still whine aobut politicians.

Not hearing from those outside the US was just an unintended bonus to my plan.:)
