Many planes have their trim settings in bizarre and insane positions when you spawn.
Like the P-38 has elevator trim in the max up position.
Other planes have things like aileron trim all the way left, or rudder trim wayoff center.
Is this a bug, or is it supposed to be that way?
I'd much prefer to start with neutral trim.

It's normal.
We did a thread on it last month.

I like having the P38 trim at the highest up setting, it makes it easier to take off and makes the 200 ias climb rate alot easier setup and maintain.
-
Perhaps the guy who used it last forgot to put the trim back?

The P-38's best climb is roughly 140 knots IAS.

Maybe, but at 200ias you actually have a chance if you get jumped. At 140ias, you are a dead man...

Actually in a 38 you are safe at any speed as long as you know how to make her behave.
She's a tough woman though. The 38 Can out turn what it can't run. nd if your slow, you can at least out turn a BNZ'r long enough to accelerate.
IMHO - It's worked for me. I hat ethe trim too. I just sit on the I key or hit Combat trim for a second then turn it back off.

Next time someone dives on your high 6, prove me wrong.
At 200ias you are alot closer to corner speed without flaps.
But you're right, I don't know what I'm talking about.

Especially if they dive on you. If you see htem well enough in advance (SA) then they will not be able to turn with you while your dropping your flaps. Bit of Rudder, and a shallow dive while he:
1. Either climbs back up looking for anothe r pass or another target.
or
2. Bleeds all his E trying to get a bead on your 38. Where you can usually outturn him. Use flaps, and use your dive brakes. a P38 can hang with a fast Zeke in turns, and a P-51B in slow turns.
If you knnow what your doing, a 38 can get you out of most situations.
Thats my opinion. don't like it too bad, we are each entitled to our own. I know what works for me. your style may vary. Good luck in the MA.

.... ummm, about the trim - I personally would like the trim position saved on exiting the plane. Next time you take it up, there you are.
