Title: KI-84 questions...
Post by: Muckmaw1 on September 15, 2004, 09:12:18 AM
I never fly (almost) japanese planes and I know this is blastphemous but...

Do we already have the Ki-84 and this is a remodel...or is this a whole new airplane?

If it's brand new, how does it compare with the LA-7, Niki, and other broadly used birds?

Is this a late war monster or what?

Thanks in advance.

Oh, what was it called?  You know, like Kate, Val...zeke...

"whole new airplane? "

 Brand spanking new.

"how does it compare with the LA-7, Niki, and other broadly used birds?"

The KI-84 is like a Ronco slicer/dicer.  And the LA and Niki are the vegetables.

So is this monster gonna be a perk ride or is it not that uber?

Good question.  While the Japanese have been generally under-represented in AH (imo) they have been quite absent from the perk ride list too.

Will have to wait & see I guess.  I'd not be surprised it it was.

While it fits in well with the latter war Allied rides, such as the LA7 and P-51D which are both not perked, IMO would it be far superior to the N1K2.
And if it is not perked I predict there'll be a whole outcry about the KI-dweeb horde. On the scale of what was seen with the "Chog"

We should get the Ki-44 for those of us who like a challenge.

The Ki-44 Shoki was one of the few IJ planes able to reach the high-altitude B-29 bombers.  I think it'd make an interesting addition to the plane set.  Armament varied between 2x 12.7mm machine guns and 2x 7.7mm machine guns, 4x 12.7machine guns; 2x 12.7machine guns and 2x40mm cannons; 2x 12.7mm machine guns and 2x20mm cannon; 4x 20mm cannon; 2x 20mm cannon and 2x 37mm cannon.

Now about the Ki-84...

The Ki-84 was influenced by the Ki-43, but had bigger guns, more armor, stronger motor, and better performance overall.  It was comparatively fast and maneuverable - theoretically faster than a Mustang.  Allied radar operators are rumoured to track a recon Ki-84 on radar and decide not to scramble Mustangs to intercept because they wouldn't catch the enemy; they'd remark "Forget it.  Its a Frank."

Armament varied between a 2x 20mm and 2x machine guns; 4x 20mm; and 2x 20mm and 2x 30mm for bomber busting.

Acroding to the book (Aircraft of world war II 300 of the wolds greatest aircraft)
 The KI-84-la `FRANK'  stats were---->

Powere plant: 1900hp Nakajima Ha-45 (army type 4) 18 cylinder to -row radial engine

Preformance: max speed 631km/h (392mph); climb to 5000m (16,405ft) in 5 min 54 sec; service ceiling 10,500m (34,450ft);range 2168km (1347 miles)

Weights:  empty 2660kg (5864lb); normal take-off 3613kg (7955lb); max take-off 4170kg (9193lb)

Dimensions:  span 11.24m (36ft 10.5 in); length 9.92m (32ft 6.5in); height 3.39m (11ft 1.25in)

Armament:  two 20mm fixed forward-firing cannon in the leading eges of the wing, and two 12.7mm fixed forward firing machine guns in the forward fuselage, plus a external bomb load of 500kg (1102lb)

these stats may vary from AH2 a bit as far as the speed go's I've noticed this in other planes already in the game.

This book dosn't seem to have stats for the La-7 just the La-5 so for the comparison of La-5 to the Ki-84-la is that the La-5 is just a touch faster at 403mph, climbs to 16,405ft 54sec faster, it's lighter all around but not by a huge difference empty the La-5 is 5743lb and max take-off is 7500lb.
The La is just a touch smaller in dimensions but just by a couple feet on each. and of course the La-5 only has the 2 20mm cannons and the 1102lb bomb load.

And as far as the N1K-j go's this book has the stas for the N1K1-J not the N1K2-j we have in the game but I'm going to asume they would be similar so here it is
The N1K1-J  was slower than the Ki-84 at 361mph, climb was 19,685ft in 7min 50sec, empty 6387lb max take-off 9526lb, It was shorter in wingspan and length and of course it had the cannons we all love. :)

Well there you go and like I said the books stats seem to differ from the game a bit. And sorry I don't have the stats for the la-7 and the N1K2-J but I hope this will help some, I tried
:D

Whole new airplane.  We're getting a new fighter (Ki-84), a new bomber (unknown) and a new tank (unknown) for the first time in two years.

It will not be as fast as the La-7, probably somewhere close to the La-5FN's speed.  It will handle better than the La-7 though.  Climb rate should be about 3,750fpm initially.  A Spitfire Mk V or IX or an N1K2-J will probably out fight it in a close quarters turning dogfight.  It's ammo load is smaller than the N1K2-J's by far and it's 20mm cannons have a very high rate of fire which will make the ammo clip feel even shorter than it is.  The Ki-61-I-Tei in AH now has the same cannons, but they fire through the prop reducing their RoF by 10-20%.

Yes, it is a late war monster.  It entered service in April, 1944, just before the P-51D did.  By comparison the N1K2-J entered service in January, 1945.  3,514 Ki-84s were built of which about 200 were pre-production aircraft, about 2,800 were Ki-84-I-Ko armed with two 20mm Ho-5 cannon (150rpg) in the wings and two 12.7mm Ho-103 machine guns (350rpg) in the cowl, about 500 were Ki-84-I-Otsu armed with four Ho-5 20mm cannon (150rpg) with two in the wings and two in the cowl.  Very few Ki-84s were armed with two 20mm and two 30mm cannon and it is unlikely that any saw combat.
