This past wednesday, a guy emailed me out of the blue about going scuba diving. I didn't know anything about this fella, but I told him I would go diving with him. He replied once more, saying that we were to also meet a woman scuba diver at the dive site.
So I post on an scuba message board that I am going diving this saturday, and a guy from the message board emails me and asks me if he could come. I tell him "sure".
We all met up at the dive site, everyone was super friendly. We dove for about an hour and 45 minutes and had a good time.
Anyways, this was my first time meeting people off the internet.
-
in mostof the cases people are alot nicer when you meet them in real life then they are on the net.
-
Glad to hear that Nilsen. I remember when a guy on this message board was threatening to beat people up at the Aces High Convention (lol).
-
If they both showed up i bet he would joke it all away and they would both have a drink. Its alt easyer to be a "bully" here than in real life :)
I doubt Skuzzy will run around at the con telling people they are "off topic" :D

Or "mute/edit" them by placing ductape over their mouth and have it say "edited for content/flame bait/etc...." :D
-
could be a great show tho. he could get a fancy hat, badge and everything :)

Alot of friendships are created on the internet, but terror lurks as well as we constantly see headline news about child abductions etc. I'm always preaching to "be nosey" when it comes to your kids.
One such friendship I've encountered was off a automobile forum, turns out the fellow and his wife live about 1/2 mile from us, on Lake Tapps. He offered to let us use his unused dock and we keep our boat at his dock during the peak heat weeks here in WA state, when the fishing is slow and the air temp is great for waterskiing, wakeboarding, etc.
-
I send people online emails inviting them to do fun things, then I beat them up.
-
Met plenty of people in person from t3h instardnet.
Mostly car stuff - meets, track events, shows, etc.
First experience I was slightly nervous about - dont even give it a second thought anymore.
If you think about it, its no different than meeting anyone else in any given situation - only youre already aware of the fact that youre all there for the same purpose - be it aviation, racing or sex with minors.
Its kinda cool actually - you could spend a year straight in a bar in your local town and never find anyone who could correctly ID and tell the difference between a 109G6 and a 109F4 based on a shadow - but I would imagine that at a place like the AH con, which Ive never been to, its got to be a hoot listening to all you grumpy old men rattle off about niki dweebs and the advantages of radial engines.
-
Of course most people are nicer in real life than they are on the Internet... they'll get dropped if they act half as "tough".
On the other hand, I'd imagine most of them are 40 year old fat guys who will shriek "If you touch me I'll SUE!!!!" if confronted in real life.

I've met a few people from here, one of the SBM, and a few people from some Xterra boards. People are generally better in real life than what you see online, I think.

sorry got carried away w/ the role playing ;)

Its Skuzzy, from the 2000 con. Helluva nice guy, and went out of his way to make sure things ran smoothly that year.

That's cool that in a community like diving (wich requires partners) you guys can do that and feel pretty safe. IE diving aint cheap nore can somone just rent the stuff and have at it.
Just goes to show one more thing the internet has done for us.
I've has a few bad experiences meeting girls online and a few good ones. I just tend to play it safe above all else.
-
Remember a decade ago when it was NOT a good idea to meet people from the internet(especially in dating)?
Now its like if you don't do it you're a nerd.

I thought he was around my age, but he is really old! Are all the other people at HTC old too? Not that it matters if they are really really old, but is just hard to imagine old people making games. ;) :D
What is the combined age of all the people at HTC?

That's a good question?
I would imagine dealing with HTC matters....managing a MMOLG....and dealing with us in the forums on a day to day basis does ad some grey hairs here and there. :)

Skuzzy is actually 26. It's moderating this board that makes him look that old.

LOL! I believe Skuzzy is actually the same age as me - 50, rapidly approaching 51! I am looking forward to meeting him and many others at the Con this weekend. Although this is only my second US Con, I have been enjoying meeting people at UK Cons (AH and AW previously) since my first AW Con in 1998.
During the last year or so, my husband became friendly with a lady he met online and a friendship has since developed between her and her husband, and us. They invited us to go and stay with them for a weekend about a year ago and we got on so well that we regularly visit them several times a year now. Yes, internet friendships can work. :)
