Title: Photography Professionals/Wedding Photographers
Post by: schizer on September 19, 2004, 05:51:27 PM
I need some advice/help me choose

Spent the entire weekend meeting with various wedding photgraphers. My fiancee and I have decided that a photojournalistic approach is best for us. The two photogs we have narrowed it down to use different equipment. The one we are leaning towards uses a 35mm format, and in the course of interviewing the others I remember a few saying 35MM was a horrible format for weddings...and I cannot remember why. The other is purely digital, I need help making a decision.

Ditto.  Except skip the disposable camera and spend the 15 bucks at a strip club.

If it were up to me it would be that simple, fact of the matter is it's her day.  And her fathers $30,000

Then let her pick the one or you'll regret it for the rest of your life.

35 MM is fine for weddings.  After looking at these sites I’m guessing that you can afford a lot.  The both look very good but I would lean toward the digital.  I would also look into the possibility of purchasing the images on CD, in their original file size.  I’m guessing that the proofs that they offer on CD are reduced.

I was married in the pre digital days.  I’d much rather have a CD of my wedding pictures than prints.

what torque said.

other than that, just have your best buddies film the whole thing with 6 megapixel digital cameras from different angles.

The image quality will be perfect, and you can make each frame of the film a photo if you so wish to.

pocket the remaining $20k for your honeymoon or kid's college fund.

Well you know women, her original plan was to have a small wedding (family and a few friends).  She assumed that she had a dowry of some sort setup and was gonna use the remaining money for a house down payment.  She later found out there was no set amount (i.e 30k set aside in a bank) but that her parents told her to "do what she wanted"  So what  originally was a small wedding has balloned into a 170-200 person monster.

Go for top quality digital.  It'll give you whatever prints you want plus CD for your computer and television viewing.

Just save the money and don't have cameras. Its not like a wedding is a rare thing in America.

thats what my wife and i did at our wedding.  Her brother took digital pictures. We also had 35mm cameras on each table so we also got views from where the guests sat and also pictures of the family.

Yes the CD will be nice, we sent our CD to close family members and to others who couldnt make it due too health problems.

if both photographers are of equal skill

I'd go digital

why? simple, flexibility,

the guy can take hundres of picture and or delete crap ones as he goes along.

as long as hes backing up etc he shouldn't loose any data

and (HERES A BIG ADVANTAGE)you can check the group pictures there on the day if he has a laptop with him and redo them if you think they look a bit crap or someone has thier eyes shut.

the 35mm guy even if he gets good shots still has the risk of mis-developing the film, maybe the camera not winding on properly etc etc

I'd also put a couple of disposable 35mm cameras on each table for the guests to play with and just collect them at the end and get them developed.

Having done this before (wedding photograher) I can give you some advice. Expect that the worst possibility IS possible. Use a photog that has BOTH digital and 35mm. The film will give you higher defintion for larger photos but the digital gives you more flexibility and does not have the processing disaster possiblity. I had THAT one happen, fortunately they were able to crop the large scratch in the film out.

You can transfer each format to the other if you want. CD's may sound like permanent storage but they are not really foolproof and they can degrade losing all yout pix. There is no guarantee that in 10 years they can even be read anymore. (remember 5.25 floppies?) Film negatives are stable and have a LONG track record for maintaining memories. Get the negatives from the photog and store them safely.

Good luck on your wedding and marriage. :aok
