This is mostly going to be an update and refreshment of a thread that Halo originally posted. I will be copying and pasting chunks of Halo's text.
Here is the problem is brief:
For example, if you fly a B-17 one mission and a Ki-67 the next, when the bandits come you'll be scrambling for gunners as follows:
B-17: 2 ball, 3 top, 4 tail, 5 chin, 6 left, 7 right
Ki-67: 2 nose, 3 top, 4 left, 5 right, 6 tail
Except for the ball turret, the B-17G and Ki-67 have largely similar gun configurations but they are organized completely differently. This greatly hinders the effective defense of the bomber for somebody who flies a variety of bombers.
This inconsistency is present throughout the bomber set in AH.
Others (my comments in parentheses) are:
Ju-88: 2 left rear, 3 right rear, 4 ventral
Lanc: 2 nose, 3 top, 4 tail
TBM: 2 turret (say rear), 3 ventral
SBD: 2 turret (say rear, and it's not a turret, is it?)
D3A: 2 turret (say rear, and it's not a turret, is it)
IL-2: 2 tail (say rear)
Boston III: 2 top (say rear)
A-20G: 2 top (say rear)
Here is Halo's suggestion, edited slightly by me. Italics are aircraft not yet in AH listed as examples of future additions:
H8K2: 2 tail, 3 top, 4 nose, 5 left, 6 right, 7 ventral
B-17G: 2 tail, 3 top, 4 nose, 5 left, 6 right, 7 ball
B-24J: 2 tail, 3 top, 4 nose, 5 left, 6 right, 7 ball
He111H: 2 ventral rear, 3 dorsal, 4 nose, 5 left, 6 right, 7 ventral front
He177A: 2 tail, 3 top, 4 ventral front, 5 top barbette, 6 ventral rear, 7 nose
B-26B: 2 tail, 3 top, 4 nose, 5 left, 6 right (latter two are ventral)
Ki-67: 2 tail, 3 top, 4 nose, 5 left, 6 right
G4M2: 2 tail, 3 top, 4 nose, 5 left, 6 right
Ju188A: 2 ventral, 3 top, 4 nose, 5 dorsal
Wellington: 2 tail, 3 nose, 4 left, 5 right
Lanc: 2 tail, 3 top, 4 nose
B-29A: 2 tail, 3 rear turrets, 4 front turrets
Ju88A: 2 ventral, 3 left top, 4 right top
Hamden: 2 ventral, 3 top, 4 nose
TBM-3: 2 ventral, 3 top
Pe-2FT: 2 ventral, 3 top
SBD-5: 2 rear
IL-2 3M: 2 rear
D3A1: 2 rear
Boston: 2 rear
A-20G: 2 rear
B5N2: 2 rear
Bf110C: 2 rear
Bf110G: 2 rear
Ju87D: 2 rear
This would allow for much more consistent position movement while defending bombers. There are, inevitably, some inconsistencies due to the varried gun arrangments on WWII bombers. The Wellington's lack of a top turret, yet having waist guns is one example. The He177A-5's 20mm cannon in the ventral front position and 7.92mm gun in the nose could both be seen as nose guns and I ordered it so that the more useful 20mm gun would occupy the normal "nose" position on the keyboard.
Something very like this, if not this exactly, would be useful for when the bombers are redone.

I'll second this. :D

I'll second this.
Quiet you!

See if I pass any more of your phone messages. :p

agree but...
how about positions match clock positions -
6 is always tail / rear
3 is always right side
9 is always left side
0 is always nose / chin
then use something left over for top and belly. 1 & 2 respectively?

I agree they need to be standardized. Make a template and use it on all buffs. If a plane does not have a ball turret or chin you would get a"You don't have that gun" or "Position unavailable" message.

I disagree with spreading the keys out and leaving large null gaps in the sequence. I think Halo's basic suggestion makes a lot more sense.

It dawned on me that if you can have the guns mapped as Hammer suggests then there is nothing to prevent you from remapping them any way you want. So you could avoid "spreading the keys out and leaving large null gaps in the sequence."

This is the quickest fix i've ever seen hitech do :). making it so you can remapp keys to what ever your heart desires, oh wait, its always been like this. lmao! just kidding around. i cant say nothing because i read the whole post and thought ,yah they need to do that, til i read easyscor last post and thought to myself, duh!!! hehe. the ol remapp the keys answer saved the day again. thinking now I remapped lots of keys, such as H=hook G=gear... the biggie F12=ck 6's <--- saves me from having to type (sorry) for the (false ck 6 call) when it was the (') key. lmao!! better yet changing the Bail key from enter key so i would not bail out on accident while typing after flying two sectors to get to a enemy base. Tell you one thing when i did bail on accident I'm sure the words i used could be used as new cuss words, no clear words come out of my mouth just sounds like these ----> I'll be dehn, nmo, frkn, gozzzmn effn, razm dizgbm followed by a loud scream/grunt. We all know what i mean right guys? I know all you guys have your special expressions too, that makes the people in your house ask you, you ok in there? We just heard you yelling. lmao!!!

Tactic,
Think it trough and you'll realize why you're suggestion doesn't work.
Ok, here it is. If I remap the "4" key to mean the tailgun on the Ki-67 (position 6) pressing it in the B-17G will take you to the left waist gun (position 6). It doesn't solve anything. It just changes the keys that are scrambled, but they remain scrambled.

TBM turret should be 2 and bottom gun shold be 3...

That is how Halo originally had it. I felt that the ventral gun's arc of fire is more tailgun like whereas the top gun is very much like the top gun on the Ki-67. After I suggested that Halo agreed.
It could go either way though.

i like it!
i always get lost when im in a b26  :lol
