Not gun control or wich gun to buy.
Was curious about any of the Married guys out there have problems w/ your wives about owning a firearm? What about protection from the kids and eduation IE whens a good age to sit them down and say "DONT TOUCH" and when to actually take them shooting? I found out we have a real life out door rifle range and club out here so I was thinking about buying a rifle and polishing up on my marksmanship skills.

My parents got me shootin at 5 with a little bity single shot .22. its best to always talk about them about dont touch unless im around. keep the key hidden to the gun cabinet.
-
I'm probably at the same stage of the decision process as you Gunslinger. The wife seems to be okay with it, and even agreed to go take the mandatory class with me when we get the chance. Don't have kids just yet, but it's important to consider them. If you're so inclined, head on over to http://www.thehighroad.org and register. It's a well-moderated, orderly forum populated by good people who shoot, hunt, and defend the Second Amendment. They even encourage those on the other side of the fence to come aboard to discuss, so as long as it's civil. You don't get canked just for having an opposing viewpoint.
As far as when to introduce the kids, it seems that if you feel they are at a point where they can demonstrate responsibility then it may be a good time. What seems to work some is to show kids that the firearm isn't a toy and that it can do permanent, serious damage to anything. Teach them the four rules. And that whenever they want to see your firearm, they need to ASK you first. Taking the mystery out of it seems to be the bottom line. But take a gander at The High Road forums - I searched there for similar concerns and found a lot of good advice. And don't be affraid to post if your search didn't answer all your questions. You won't be ridiculed there.

I was shooint was bullets out of a 1911 when I was 8. My dad let me handle the guns supervised when I asked from then on. From 16 on I was shooting at the local range on my own.
My GF is a better shot then I am and her only problem with guns is how much they cost. (with a 9mm, she wont shoot a .45, she broke both wrists multible times falling off horses and they are sensitive now)
She will not let her sons, shoot tell the are 12. If they were mine I would insist on gun safety lessons before then, but they are not and I respect her wishes. I also do not want to Step on the Xs toes, he wants to be the one to teach them to shoot.
So when they are around the guns get locked away more then I normaly do, and I have no ammo in the house.
-
Wife has a Conceal and Carry license so there is no problem there. My kids were 4 and 7 when they began helping dad clean the firearm inventory. We discuss gun safety while we're cleaning, and I answer their silly questions like "Will this bullet go through a board?" Introducing them to firearms and letting them handle them takes out all the mystery of firearms. My dad did this with me, and we had 21 guns in a closet unlocked when I grew up. We never touched the guns unless Dad was around because frankly we didn't care about them, the "mystery" of guns was not there since we were introduced to them at a young age.
Curiousity killed the cat. Familiarization made him understand and not be curious anymore.
This winter my oldest son (turns 9) gets his first BB gun. If he still shows interest when he's 10 (and displays common sense and a sense of safety), I'll give him a single shot 410 for duck hunting next year.
-
Rip is right on...
That was my dads plan as well, and that is why if I wanted to see them he let me. All the while reinforcing gun safety.
Not one of his guns were locked up when I was a kid, hidden in a wall compartment, but not locked up.

Follow Rip and GTo's advice. They hit it right on. Education is the key. My daughters are 9 and 10 and have been shooting since they were six, and hunting since they were eight. Oh yeah, and the wife too!

My wife doesn't want me to have any..so I don't right now...but I will..I usually get the last word when I want something:D

I see they are sporting the "wanna be like daddy haircuts" ;)
But seriously thanks for the advice. My daughter who is real prissy probably wouldnt want to even look at a gun, she hates fireworks with a passion.
My son would love them just because they are daddy's. He's only 3 though and obviously way to young. My wife has allways said flat out no guns in the house. She's kind of a lost confusd conservative thinking liberal. If I want it bad enough and I use my credit card to pay for it she would probably cave in as long as the kids don't know about it and will never be able to access it.
The bolt action rifle thread got me wanting to shoot again. If I can find one that I like for cheap I just might go with it.
-
My Dad had me cleaning his .38 when I was 6. I got my first Pellet gun at 7 and my single shot .22 (I still have it hanging on the wall) at 8. He did turn me off guns a bit when he burst thru the door yelling "Die MF'ers" and firing a blanks when I was 5. Dad was an A-hole when he was drunk, and that was most of the time.
-
depending on the kid 5-6 is a good age to teach them to shoot (some kids never seem to mature enough).
I never do the "don't touch" thing. its more of a "not by yourself, ask me to show you" and then allow them to touch, explain how it works, etc. give them all the info you can as soon as they show interest, take it as far as you can (until it's obvious they aren't listening).
IMO if they know they can gave (more or less) complete access, then there is no big mystery to tempt them into getting their hands on it when you aren't around.
most of the exact time and way to approach it depends on your kid, you're the only one who can really judge that. most kids have an automatic curiosity, when it pops up, feed it immediately, otherwise they may go looking for (wrong) info on their own.
as far as the wifes issues. she said no, I bought them anyway, she got over it.

My better half sometimes just comes up with stuff out of the blue....
She says she wants to learn how to shoot as her dad didn't teach her (old school macho kinda guy)...and was insistant that she first learn how with a .30-06!
It took a while but I managed to talk her into beginning with a .243.

You haven't recently pissed her off have you?

When my wife was a kid her father shot though her bedroom wall while cleaning a pistol (with her in the room), but surprisingly she's not totally against them. I have a number of pistols including some I inherited when her father passed away.
Kind of a money thing though - "Do you really need to spend money on..." It helps that the guns I want to collect cost under $200 each.
I plan on getting a good, lockable gun cabinet when I get the rifle(s). That should make it easier when we have kids, but I don't think she's quite thought about that angle yet, so I'm not going to bring it up any time soon :)

until I could get the gun safe, I just pulled the bolts out of the riffles and locked them in a $20 firesafe, and bought another 2 to hold all but 1 of the pistols.
it isn't much for theft prevention but it'll keep uneducated kids who may visit out of trouble.
-
"Senator Kerry, where's the rifle?" Gottlieb asked. "In which one of your mansions are you hiding that gun? Why should it be okay for you to have a Communist Chinese assault rifle when you think nobody else should have one? And if you don't have one, why would you intimate to Outdoor Life that you do?"
Cause he earned it.

My wife positively freaks. I was around guns most of my teenage years... then there's the military time so I've had the training, etc...
Years ago, my mother left her pistol at my house. She used to carry a .32 with her everywhere. At the time, our kids were toddlers so the gun was hidden away in a closet. After she left, I realized that she'd forgotten it. I took the gun out of the closet and began ensuring that it was indeed clear and my wife happened to walk in... "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" I very calmly replied, "making sure it's safe".
"Are you sure it's safe?"
"Yes, I'm sure."
"I don't like that here."
"I know. I'll get it back to mom as soon as possible."
etc...

Rip and GTO are right. I own 2 firearms (so far). An HK USP .45 (full size) and a Sig Sauer SHR-970 30-06. MY wife and I have a 3year old son, he does not know about the guns, yet. He will, it's an eventuality.
I use to work at the Michigan National Bank Cash Vault as an armed guard (I miss the training). Before I left, I grabbed a Diebold "undercounter safe" (from a closed branch) Whenever we have a party or get together the HK gets locked in this. The thing is 2ft by 2ft, by 3ft and weighs WELL OVER 300 pounds.
My parents used to blow a gasket about me having this as I grew up in a household. My Dad would have beat my arse for having an X-acto knife without them knowing about it. Now they realize that I chuck the thing in the safe.
I'm looking at a Les Baer Concept .45.
I'm also gonna be sending my USP to Clay Novak and have Novak sights put on it. Wife has NO IDEA yet.
<> all.

Rip may be the bestest Dad evar, but using a 410 for duck hunting might be unethical hunting at best.
If he makes a perfect shot at 20 yards, it might kill the duck. If he isn’t as perfect as his Dad, it will be wounded. That’s pretty shiity sportsmanship.
Buy the kid a 20 gauge, and make it a semi-auto. Single shot shotguns kick like a sob, even a 410. Semi-auto’s absorb the kick, and 20 gauge rounds actually kill small game, and ducks.

we feel the same about pink shorts and the ol 9 iron defense idea.
when I was a kid most of us had a loaded (or not) 22 or shotgun in the closet. you didn't have to worry about it unless you had exchange students from bermuda, england or mars in the neighborhood... everyone else strong enough to work the action knew about guns.
It is best to let kids see and handle guns whenever they want.... under supervision.. My grandaughter is 2 1/2 and she sees my guns around and I tell he not to touch. As she gets older I will show her more about the guns as she wishes.
I have a gun safe now tho because too many American kids know as much about em as people from bermuda, england or mars and are just as dangerous.
and sandie... your story is very revealing... explains a lot of your views here... you are afraid your wife may read this BB right?

I live half a mile(if that) from the police station and have a 5 & 7 year old, so I do not feel the need to own one. If I lived away from the city I would probably own a shotgun. Gun lessons?, shoot, 7 days a week barely pays for the swimming and piano lessons.

I grew up around more guns than you can imagine. My dad was a big-time collector. And there were two rules:
It's always loaded until you check it
Never point it at anything you don't want a bullet in.
Now there are more rules such as making sure of your target and what's behind it, etc. However, when it comes to guns in the house, those two must be followed. And the nice thing is, they cover each other. Every one has had or will have one AD in their life. But, as long as you remember one of the rules, you'll be ok.
And another thing. I never had to sneak around to see a gun. If I wanted to mess with one, I just had to ask and my dad would get it down for me and let me see it. There was no mystery. And that's the main thing. Take the mystery out of it, teach them the right way to handle a gun and they will be fine.
-
PS, I've always made sure that any woman I've dated knew that guns were going to be a part of my life and my kids lives (If we were to the point of thinking about that future). And if they'd said no guns, I'd said goodbye. They are a part of my life and who I am. Any woman who is going to be worth being with will understand and support that.

What makes it funny is the Law Abiding gun-owners never infringe on the Anti-Gun rights. But the Anti-Gun people do everything possible to try and eliminate rights for Law Abiding gun owners.

Not sure about that, recently Lazs was trying to convince some limeys that they should buy the cheap Makerov's. :D

The wife already agreed to get one, we just always seem to find better ways to spend $500.

I even threatened violence if the limey's here (BB) didn't buy handguns....
It's for their own good...

Laz2 Ive been seeing you in this gun treads all the time, and I suddenly understand somthing (maybe)
what happend to you and or your family to need the guns that bad ?
I personally have 1 shotgun after my dad (he is not dead but gave me it, cause he is a hunting freak, meaning he want me to be it too)
well I have my shotgun but i diveded it into 2 peaces (in locked boxes) so no freaking criminal can steal it if they want. (meaning fast the alarm gonna get themout first if im not home)
I can still use it if I want but, really I'm not the mountain guy my dad want me to be, but we are good fellows anyway.
Guns is overrated and giving a false sense of security, ok if needed but not likely.

People Like Laz and I, along with most of the gun people on this board own them because we like guns and shooting.
Guns facinate me. I love taking them apart and seeing how they work. I love the chalenge of being a good shot. I have never bought a gun because I felt I needed it to defend myself, I bought them because I like them.
That I can use one to defend myself is an added perk I truely hope I will never have to use.

exactly GTO..
I love shooting guns..I love how simple they are...

airguard... I suppose that a more accurate and to the point question would be.... what happened to the anti gun nuts on this board to make them so fearful of others rights and hoibbies?
like it or not... gun have changed the course of history and still do. the greatest workmanship and art and ingenuity of man have been lavished on firearms. to not see this is blindness. To not appreciate it is neurotic.
I don't care if you own a gun or not.... I think you would be better off but... none of my bussiness... I do however feel that it is not your place to tell me what firearms I can own or how many.
I jump into gun threads because.... anti gun threads threaten my hobbie and rights.... pro gun threads are interesting to me.

GTo,
If you go through that much ammo(I do too) why aren't you reloading? I can load around 600-700 .45 ACP rounds per hour on my machine. It saves alot of money!!
-
Ya know.... thinking it over...
If a grown man has to ask permission of his wife to own a firearm.... he probly shouldn't own one in any case.
It is like my then 60 year old neighbor came over to my grandfather several decades back and had a skillsaw (circular saw) in the box. Was gonna build a fence and knew my grandfather did a lot of woodworking.
He wanted gramps to show him how to use the saw.
gramps told him "if you are 60 years old and don't know how to use one then it would be best if you just took it back to the store that sold it to you."

That is fair enough, just wondered.
I dont have that view on guns that you guys but hell I am not bothered either, as long as you threath them with respect.
I do belive you do that, since you prolly know the danger and good sides with it :D
Diffrent countries diffrent views no big deal :)
Beside Norway is a small tiny country with less crime, and not that much violence I guess. (nothing is perfect here either by all means)

That's a tough call. Here's how I was raised:
We had guns in the house since my earliest memory. Before I was even in school I was hunting with my father. I'd just follow him along. At the end of the afternoon he'd let me shoot the gun. This is around age 5. He would put the 12 ga. in his shoulder and aim at a can or whatever. I'd stand behind him and look down the barrel, careful to keep my nose away from the stock. Then he'd let me pull the trigger. This went on weekly, through all types of hunting seasons. The kids in my neighborhood had BB guns. I wasn't allowed to get one. My father said they were worthless and taugh bad habits.
On my 10th birthday (the legal hunting age in Maine), I got my own 20 ga. From that point on I was able to hunt with my father, but not until I took a hunter's safety course. After growing up around guns and with my father's instruction, I probably could have taught the class. From age 10 to 15 I hunted with my father. At age 16, he made me take another hunter safety course, then I was able to hunt alone.
I think familiarization is the key when you have children and guns in the house. They weren't a novelty, I knew what they were and what they were capable of. If I wanted to shoot one, at any age, I could. No big deal. I was taught to respect them.

words of wisdom there. I can't stand to be around "men" who actually have to ask their wife permission to do stuff. I know a guy who DOES pee sitting down because his wife "likes for him too".:rofl
-
it's not about the gun, it's about the money. You just go on ahead and spend a significant portion of your disposable income on anything without bouncing it off your other half. I call that just stupid.
-
My wife has her own weapon and loves to go shooting. She especially loves full auto.

i go tthrough no more then 2,000 rounds of 9mil..
2,000 of .223
800 or so .22
1,000 .357 (sweet lever action)
2,000 12 guage (trap)
with prices being $100-$150 per 1,ooo rounds..seems dam cheap and so i dont buy all the reload..clean brass...ect stuff
I do keep my brass to stockpile..now i just need 200,000 primers ...so when Red Dawn Comes im Ready:D
btw..I shot 3 rounds of trap today...dammit forgot my wallet at home..
hit 68- 75 pigeons...dam fun,,,,,ya....i did shoot from 16yds..lol

MT ... if you can't scrape up the 500 bucks for a hobby or defense of your family or something you want... you don't want it bad enough.
You can buy very good russian designed pistols for $150 both makarov and tokerev... nagants go cheap. Surplus rifles go for $75.
When I was married mostly I was the only one working but.. we paid the bills and even if it was small we made sure that we divided the "spending money" between us... you could spend it on shoes or guns or lunch out with people or whatever. might have took a while but was easy to get a firearm if I wanted it enough. Sometimes I had too many... sometimes not enough... either way, it was none of her concern... no more than it was my concern how many shoes she owned or makeup or whatever.
I have allways felt that hobbies are important. I won't stop a girlfriend or wife from spending money on a hobby and she damn sure won't stop me...
course I'm not married anymore and have no desire to be but...

This is kinda off topic...
Me and my family were down in destin florida a month or two ago and went to the bass pro shop. My two boys were amazed at all the fishing stuff and guns, etc. camping gear and whatnot. I was feeling guilty that I had not taken them fishing or camping yet. Much to my dismay, my boys found a shelf with a red ryder bb guns on it. They were all over that. Reminded me of the movie "a christmas story". I was about to buy them one a piece when reason popped in my head. They are 8 and 9 and would prolly get into bb gun battles like me and my brothers did when we were kids. once I popped my brother in the neck with a pellet, he ws so mad I thought he would murder me. Then there was the time he got shot in the finger and had to have a bb surgically removed. :p
Then I saw a shelf with slingshots on it. I told them how they could "bird hunt" with their new slingshots. They were all over that. The past several weeks I come home from work and my boys are hid out behind bushes trying to take out some robin in the bird feeder. Kyle asked me if I was good enough to knock one outa the air with a slingshot. I told him you'd have to practice a lot for that.:lol
-
another point to all this is that like a lot of the worst gun control countries.... we are making it harder for ordinary citizens to own guns... we make em jump through more and more expensive hoops and the paperwork has driven the small mom and pop sporting goods stores that used to sell firearms out of the bussines. record keeping and red tape is the new weapon of the left.
