Title: Gas Dryer Repair
Post by: Sandman on September 20, 2004, 04:44:52 PM
Got a question... Our three year old gas dryer is acting up. It's not getting hot.

Wife called the repairman and we're on the schedule eight days from now, so I'm going to crack it open and see if I can figure it out.

Any suggestions or trouble-shooting tips?

There is a heat sensor dealy near the burner. Make sure it's ok. Also check the piezo ignitor for spiders and such. Could just be dirty.

I just fixed my dryer and found THIS SITE (http://www.pcappliancerepair.com/vitema.htm) was a lot of help. There's really not much to fixing a dryer (gas or electric) and you will be wasting money on a repairman if you have ANY mechanical ability at all.

dryer basics
1.   make sure the vent is clear.
2.  vacuum and brush out all of the lint, especially around sensors.  (after doing 1 & 2 test it so you don't go taking apart a perfectly good dryer)
3.  check the belt tension and guide wheels (look for lint in bearings and around shafts)

on gas dryers use a brass brush and clean the burner and igniter (for some reason spiders love to clog up gas lines)

I'll second the 'check the vent', that's what made ours have the exact same symptoms.

Use a Zippo lighter and check real good for leaks! If it aint that, then its probably that there flux capacitor.
