Well, I decided to release a preview for my upcoming sound pack, and this is one for the P-51D.
http://www.sitesled.com/members/fruda
It takes about 45 seconds to download on 3+mbps cable.
EDIT: Now in .ZIP format.
-
So I have to buy winRAR to listen to your preview.
Not a freeware RAR program ?? If so give me an address.
Thanks !!

Something's going on. Everybody gets Waffle's pack, and he uses WinRAR.
Nobody downloads mine, and I use the same damn archive program. I *have* to use WinRAR so the one pack won't use my entire webspace account.
So much for trying to help the community. Sorry if I'm being "rude" (actually, I'm not the least bit sorry), but only a few people have actually thanked me for my (very difficult) work.
Would it kill you to just download WinRAR? I mean really, how difficult can it be?
Oh, and JB73 for complimenting my work.
-
relax Fruda. everyone appreciates people putting time into things.
-
WinRAR does a better job of compressing media files. When I was repacking Waffle's stuff for my server what would take about 28M in ZIP was down to around 23M in RAR. I was surprised to see this too ... WinACE also did a better job that ZIP, but that's even less well-known. Anyway, that's the main reason I repacked using WinRAR ... for folks on slower connects, a 5M difference is a big deal.
Fruda, if you need hosting space for your files, just say the word. All I ask is that you break the package up to something around 25M chunks to keep the server load manageable. If you wanna use ZIP that's fine too.

Your taking this all the wrong way Fruda. I downloaded WinRAR a year or so ago and it converted ALL my winzip files to WinRAR..
I deleted WinRAR and finally got my stuff together again. AND it was a trial when downloaded.
I have used/everybody has used Winzip for compression as long as I can remember.
For some reason now it's not good enough. Winzip works, it's free, works just dandy and I don't want the toybox converted.
Simple as that. If you personally want to change it up, pay for something that's available free, works well and is pretty much a "standard" in everybodys box for compression files for the last few years then you go for it.
But don't get upset when people pass because of the baggage involved. I don't have waffles for the same reason.
I'm not going there. Been there and done that.
You zip it, I'll download it. I'd really like to hear your work.
-
Well, I'd use WinZIP if I had enough space on my server.
I just got steamed because so few people downloaded my original work (WB2004 conversion pack, you could call it), getting Waffle's instead, thus shunning mine.
It looks like it could go the same way here. But I have to say this --- At least my engine sounds don't have fly-by's inserted in the waveforms.
If I can get the webspace for it, I'll gladly use WinZIP. Until then, I can't use anything but WinRAR.
Thanks for being reasonable about this... A lot of people here wouldn't be.
-
Ok, I uploaded the new .ZIP of the pack. I took off the .RAR version, because nobody downloaded it.
It was a waste of space.
Anyway, check it out, and give comments.

I think it is great we have guys working on optional sounds for the game. It gives people choices.
Fruda, don't take offense if no one, or very few, download the sound pack. You seem to be fairly new to me. Waffle and Mitsu have been around along time.
It might go to comfort level. It might help if you (and you may already have, but I have missed it) talk about how you came to create the sound packs.
I find a little history about this seems to help. Just a thought.
Also consider making an announcement in the "General" forums about the sound pack.
-
Somebody moved the announcement I made about my first pack, lol.
Yeah, when this pack is done, I'll give the new topic the works. Info on how long it took, why it took so long, what tools I used, why I decided to do this, etc.
And if nobody downloads it, well, at least I'll have it :lol .
-
I look forward to it. Oh, Fruda, we have made changes so your topic will not get moved again.
-
Yeah, I was wondering why it got moved, since Waffle posted an announcement of v1.8 (I think it was that version) of his pack, and I think it got moved, too.
-
Fruda - I hate to be an arse, but do you remember when I posted several times about using the sounds that I edited together for use in other packs? The one about it being ok to use if you mix and match on your own pc, but not to "lift" for use in the creation of other soundpacks - at least as long as I am around Aces High?
Checkout your stall sound in the 51 preview pack.
Just a gentleman's request.
Keep up the work - looking forward to hearing some new sounds for AH.
-
I'm not sure why you show zero downloads. I know that I downloaded the preview...the engine sounds are very good...they have a deeper (real) sound to them.
I think your server is reporting false info to you.
I wish you guys would quit screwing with the "check 6" and "warning" sounds, though. Just my opinion. :D
-
Now it's showing the downstream info. Sitesled must've been doing maintenance.
Thanks for downloading the preview... Still waiting for Nefarious to upload his GV sounds, lol.
-
Yeah, I'm just using that as a placeholder. I've got more stall horns. You should hear the one I have for the Lancaster III.
Don't worry --- None of your stuff will be in the final product. I am, however, using some of Spade's buzzers and Check6/Warning sounds, since he said I could.
-
I flew tonight with the P-51 preview installed for the first time. I hope you don't mind my open honesty here. The startup and shutdown sound good. But, the full-rev.....errrmmm...IMHO...not so good. 1) it sounds like a helicopter. I kept looking for the collective. :o 2) there is this sound that repeats every 2 seconds or so. that was what drove me nuts.
I'm not a sound guru, like you and Waffle. So, I don't presume to tell you how to do your job. But, maybe if the sample was a bit longer, there would be less chance of the annoying repeat?
Just had to say what I felt. :)
-
Thanks for the response. I'll check that repeat out...
...But, that "helicopter" sound is how a Merlin engine sounds when you're in the cockpit. I think the Merlin sound most of you are familiar with is the external one.
I *had* a thread in the Feeback forum about external engine sounds, and why we need them. It would be a very nice addition to the game, and wouldn't take much extra work.
-
Well, since I'm on my old PC now, I can hear exactly what you're talking about.
I optimized this pack for users with newer sound cards, such as SB Live! and up.
I use an Audigy 2 ZS on my gaming machine, and the annoying sound we hear ever 2 seconds or so is an engine cycle effect. These old cards just don't have the fidelity to mix it and display it correctly, thus the annoying "chunk" sound you're talking about.
Low-res sound cards and on-board audio will not do this pack justice.
http://www.newegg.com
They have SB Audigy 2 ZS cards for about $100, if you can spare it. It's worth the price.
-
This is my current soundcard:
Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 Digital (Dell), DR release 1.1.3
-
Are your card's settings maxed?

It's not a technical problem. The sound is something that is part of the natural sample. Where I meant to go with my post is...perhaps a longer sample would help the engine sounds from seeming repetitive.

Hardware accelerationg 1 notch shy of "FULL."
Sample rate conversion set to "BEST."

lol spade:)
you got some nice sounds in there in v1.2. They sound real familiar to me.
-
 Some are yours? fix right away. brb.
-
Just tested the same engine sound on my gaming PC. It sounds fine.
No errors, no glitches, no annoying short cycles. It all sounds how it's supposed to...
-
Sounds good to me :)
Looking forward to trying out the rest of em.......;)
