I just visited your bird forum, for the first time. Awsome photos you and Myelo have on there. My wife loves hawks, so I hope you don't mind I d/l all your hawk photos to show her.

You are turning him on.

Oh, jeeze, I forgot how passionate those birders can get when they think someone's actually interested in birds. Kinda like when someone of my friends wants to talk airplanes with me, lol.
-
Ummm... I don't think I've gotten passionate about it. It's a fun hobby. I have noticed people are definately passionate in the anti side of the house though. I swear there's alot of people that question their sexuality on a daily basis around here. .
Feel free to download any pics posted there. Let me know if you'd like them in greater than 800x600 resolution. I think I have about 90% of them in 1024x768 or larger.

Mini-d is gay.
-
You should grab Photoshop Mini. Adjusting the levels and saturation with a little filter masking can make a big difference in a pic.
Nice shots.:aok
-
What camera/ lens combo and film do you favor? Nice work.
-
I have CS torque. I'm still trying to learn the neuances of it, though.

It's all the camera... a Canon Digital Rebel (300D) SLR body. I have the cheapest Cannon 75-300mm telephoto lens you can buy attached to it with a very cheap doubler. Torque and Saburo have the high end glass and it makes a big difference.
I'm planning on buying a 20D later this year and giving the 300D to the wife. I'll have to see when I can scrape together enough extra cash to get a big high-end lens to go with it... But that's more than the camera body itself.
-
Somehow I just cant picture MiniD gleefully prancing around the forest snapping splendid photos of small birds.
-
I make up for the wonderful feeling by stiffarming any mountain bikers that come within reach. I could really pull a soapbox out there and go off... but I think I'd prefer just stiffarming them.
-
MiniD are all those taken at your work site's ponds?
-
There's a thread titled "from work" where all of the pictures are taken from here at the ronler acres campus. We have 23 acres of wetlands here.
-
I see it now, all looks good but I definitely think you could take advantage of better lens.
-
This I know grun. I take the compliments on them in stride. They could be much better. The sad thing is that even with $2000 worth of glass, they'll never be as nice as the digiscoping stuff that's showing up these days. Oh well, at least I'll be able to point and click.
-
Oooooohhhhh, birdie pictures! Actually I love them and I've taken a ton over the years. Mostly ducks, geese, pheasant, quail.... after they're hearts have stopped.

MiniD, to me, just that you have the patience to persevere and grab some of these shots is impressive. So, when I compliment you on the photos, I'm not just talkin about the quality. There's composition, lighting, environment...all that to consider. "Point and click"...yeah right:aok
-
Hehehe... no offense meant there slim. They love them here at work too. 2 have been published and a few more have been made into prints that are displayed around the campus.
I enjoy the aspect of capturing the birds on film (or chip). It's difficult to do due to their size and flightiness. There's no reason for a bird to be 50 feet away when it can bee 300 feet away instead. So, I apreciate the compliments in that regard. But the photo quality is lacking and I'm really working on that.
And rip... you should check the site out. It has a picture of a Bald Eagle that flew about 35 feet away from me. I didn't even crap my pants when it happened.

Try feeding your dog at 5am and not expect that sucker to come swooping down near you.;) Knowing its there, and NOT knowing its there is like your personality compared to someone well liked.

Even tho it has its quirks the 100-400 IS is probably the best all round lense on the market for the sub pro user.
I prefer action or inflight shots opposed to static ones. Without the IS most of these shots would of been impossible as they are all hand held and at 300-400mm. I did the tripod and folding chair routine during the spring and it got quite tiresome after a few weeks. Don't you ever get the urge to shoot something else Mini ?
Seldom do i shoot wildlife anymore, too unpredictable and often too time consuming. Humans are much more predictable and easier to shoot, just ask Laz. I'm an average skilled photographer but with Canon's IS and Photoshop even i can capture some nice ones, just by pointing a clicking.
Whatever you do Mini spend the doe to get Canon L glass with IS and don't ferget the extended warranty. You'd be better off grabbing a better lense first cuz the D300 is just a 10D with crippled firmware.
Happy Hunting.

I'm uber jelous how well Canon does sky..
-
Yeah, I know Torque. When I bought the camera, I figured there was enough to learn that a quality lens wouldn't necessarily be the smartest thing at the time. In hindsight, I'm glad I took that aproach. I definately handle both the camera and lenses diferently then I did when I got them. I also opted not to get the extended warranty on the lens which I realise was a big mistake... but one better made on a $200 lens vs a $1500 lens.
I'll probably be getting the 20D and L IS 100-400 lens at the same time. And... my 300D does not have crippled firmware... maybe a bit of a limp, but definately not crippled.
Rip, you tell yourself whatever you need to in order to feel safe leaving your house. Those big scary birds are out there just watching and waiting... waiting and watching.

I don't think there are many people who are truly 'anti', so much as it just being a nice obvious target to take a shot at you now and then.

Now if they ever found out that you take most of your bird pics on the way to ballet class... well.
-
Yeah I think the capt makes a good point. I personally think it's kinda great that you get out there and take pics of birds.
But yeah... it makes for a helluvah luscious target. Just one of those things. I think I've taken a coupla swats at it myself.
I doubt I'll stop, but... uhm, yeah.

it's not like you're building a robot or anything :p
-
Not much of a difference between shooting a birdie with a camera over gun you studmuffins. Actually using a camera takes a tad more skill and hunting capability, cuz you have to get closer and have no obstructions and all the time working the sun.
The only difference i see is if one accidentally shoots a friend, you don't have to dig a hole before going home.

As we were talking it decided to revisit long enough to get a good look at it. It had a yellowish back with dark grey sides and a light grey belly.
I'm still laughing!!!!!!!!!!!
cool pics though mini keep up the good work!
-
Hehehe... Gunslinger, that hummingbird is why my wife let me buy the 300D.
Oh... took this one at work today (caution: rip, don't look or you'll have nightmares):
