Snapped these about 30 minutes ago.
Was outside smoking a butt when I heard a an engine I dont normally hear around the Philly area - military but not the usual A10's or F18's from WGNAS.
Walk out and look up to see an F15 circling overhead and dropping flares! WTF?
Run inside to get my camera and see if I cant snap a few pics. I missed the great shot opportunities directly overhead but he circled around about a 1/2 mile distant and did it again. Run out at high speed, circle, drop flares, repeat.
Looking around I was surpised to see that there was a small private aircraft close to him. I wonder if perhaps the guy in the private plane was either flying where he wasnt suppose to or not responding on his radio and the flares were designed to get his attention or alter his course. There certainly arent any Stinger armed terrorists in suburban Philly that Im aware of.
I would imagine a non-responsive pilot in a post-9/11 world would make people nervous even if it was small. Ive never seen an F15 around here aside from airshows and Ive never seen one drop flares for no purpose.
Anyway, the 15 looks armed in the pics - cant tell if the hardpoints on the wings are holding drop tanks or AAM's though.
Wonder what the problem was.
(PS: Pics are large because I couldnt zoom any closer and wanted to retain detail. Small in file size, though.)

Weird, I see 'em just fine. Personally, I think they're just marking your location, Saur, and the authorities should be along shortly.

They are there for me...still.
BTW, the black helicopters are nothing to be afraid of. You need to steer clear of the transparent ones though, kind of hard to do I know, since you can't hear them either due to the stealth turbojet technology and low-resistance rotors and all...but those clear choppers are the evil ones.

There is a TFR in the Baltimore area today (must be the Pres)
The flares are the last warning to an intercepted aircraft to contact ATC or risk fire.
The pilot is in BIG trouble you can bet.
He should have checked the NOTAM's or had a flight brief, I dont fly with out one, the pop up TFR are a *****.

Well, as you know I live over at Willow Grove and all I can say is "Wow..!" I've never seen anything like that in the Philadelphia area. It is not from NAS Willow Grove, that's for sure. None are based there. Even if it was just passing through, I've been home all day and would have heard it taking off.
I don't doubt your pictures but I find it very strange that they would be dropping Pyrotechines over a such a populated area. Very strange....

The hardpoint shadow on the right is likely a fuel tank. Can't make out any Missles but it would be very hard to see it from the distance.

There is nothing in Philly worth bombing besides the Liberty Bell, and it's already broken. I think it's a recon over Saur's place in prep for the Feds.;)

A: The pilot is a heavy smoker and they dont alow smoking at the base
or
B: He saw you breaking wind in your yard and he wanted to have some fun with your gasses.

Thanx Scootter... I looked in the 2003 FAR/AIM and there's no mention of it... but it makes sense... NORAD doesn't necessarily answer to the FAA... it's amazing what you can do when your aircraft are armed. :cool:

I live in Feasterville, thats northeast of philly, and east of willow grove, a stone throw from both. I didn't see or hear anything, althou for the Eagles game they circled over my house until all four could up and get into formation, WOW , I missed the photo, Gotta stop looking at the sound and realizing they are so far ahead.

To me it looks like an F/A-18 because of the slanted vertical stabilizers, but it could just be the angle ofthe picture.
Also, im not the one that got a good close up look at it either.

It's an F-15.
Also, looks like two aircraft in the 1st two pics.
The angle hides both vertical stabilizers. What we see are both "elevons" imho.

Yes it did. Apparently Bush was speaking today in King of Prussia (yes, we have a town here named King of Prussia) and they had a 60 mile NFZ that this guy violated. Two F15s and a police chopper had to escort him to a local rinky-dink airport.

Plenty of trees in Philly actually, but Im in suburbia just outside of the city in Montgomery County... bout 20 miles or so from Otto and the NAS.

Yes, 11 oc news.... Bush was in Pittsburg and will be heading east, a guy took off and headed west unknown the airspace was restricted for the prez's flight, f15 forced him to land at limrick (SP) he was questioned then released.

TFRs :( it is so convenient to open one at the last minute and blame the sunday pilots.
