Title: Now lets fix the N1K2
Post by: gatt on October 14, 2000, 03:54:00 AM
From the famous Japanese a/c of the Pacific War by R.Francillon:

Against the high flying B-29s the Shiden Kai was less successfull as its climbing speed was insufficient and the power of its Homare 21 fell rapidly at high altitudes.

Official data say 7'22" to get to 6,000mt (19,685ft). Our NIKI takes 6'10" to get to 19,685ft, with 100% ammo and fuel, full WEP. Moreover, she climb very slowly only the last meters ... up to 18,000ft she is a real rocket.

Has anyone other/different performance data to justify actual NIKI figures?

P.S.: I say NIKI and not N1K2-J becouse ours is not the official Shiden Kai  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

What was the power setting and weight of the aircraft tested at 7'22"?

OK - I'll have to pay this one. The N1K2-J climbs about 200fpm faster than the HTC chart says it should. However PYRO has said the speed chart is wrong, perhaps the climb chart is also incorrect.

From "Japanese Aircraft, Performance & Characteristics, TAIC manual"

The N1K1-J, time to climb to 19,686 feet was 5.5 minutes.

And according to the book Gatt is quoting from, the N1K2-J should climb faster than the N1K1-J.

The problem with finding a definitive numbers on any late war Japanese aircraft is going to be what fuel was it tested with. 89 octane fuel which the Japanese used late in the war, or 100 octane fuel like the US used in the war and during post war testing.

Go back to some of the posts on this aircraft back during the beta. There were some lengthy discussions on this aircraft and this exact subject in the aircraft & vehicle section

You missed my point Fishu.

I wasn't just talking about the N1K2, I was talking about every single instance of this "I JUST know its too good" crap.

If you have data, post it, otherwise layoff.

BTW, Fishu, I fly mostly British aircraft and the N1K2 is one of my biggest headaches, almost as much as F4Us, P-51s, Fw190A-5s and Bf109G-10s.

I did find it funny how fast it went from "The Allied aircraft are too good compared to the Axis aircraft." too "The Allied aircraft and Japanese aircraft are too good compared to the German aircraft".
Seems that what the LW fans always meant by "Axis" was German, screw the Japanese and Italians.

It looks more to me like Italian one is complaining of N1K2, not German one...
So how can you say that german 'fans' are complaining of japanese planes?  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)
I weren't complaining, I was just sticking stick in your reply.
I just wish that Germans would get such uber plane too as japs  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

1.03 NIKIs were dangerous, 1.04's are even more. They could really thank the new E-saving FM. Up to 20K they are simply rockets, they can do flat 180deg and then even catch you extending at 300mph+.

Something that is changing the AH dogfighting style. Take just a look at the MA, full of NIKIs and C-Hogs. They have the best difficulty-esy kill ratio. I'm loosing some fun, but its just my humble opinion.

I begin to like Spitfires, mind you  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) lol
