So... last night, I watched a DVD... Franka Potente in "Run Lola Run".
German movie... english subtitles... I think this is probably the second german movie I've ever watched. First one was "Das Boot".
Anyway... It occurred to me that in the past, the only German I've ever heard at length was usually in some sort of war movie and then it's loud and guttural.
I had no idea how beautiful it sounds when spoken softly by a woman.
...and no, I've never been to Europe.
-
Yup! (LOTS of german secretariies where I work) . Same goes for Japanese, if all you've heard were Karate/Samurai/Manga movies language... it does sound completely different once you're there.
-
A girl I knew in high school spoke fluent french, and might I add, it sounds great behind closed doors and bed sheets.
Then again, any lanugage and/or accent sounds great in the bedroom. As long as it isn't New York English or Chicagoan
-
I would have to say Thai is one of the most melodic sounding languages out there.
-
it's giberish and should be against the law.
lazs
-
Yeah, I learned German in high school because it was the easiest language for me to learn.
There are some pretty nifty German movies out there, and then there are some really ****ed up ones. But then again I guess a german person could say that about our movies.
-
Watch "Das Experiment"
-
Sandman - how did you rate "Das Boot"? I have never seen it, but would pick it up 2nd hand off eBay if it was any good.
-
I am not Sandman, but I can tell you it's pretty good. Worth buying IMO
-
HEy Beetle,
Das Boot is one of the best war movies ever. imo. At least the original german version. I dont know how it is if its translated.
Its the first choice if you are tired of that hollywood crap where is always the same old message: We are good we are better we safe the world.
Greetings
-
Das Boot is outstanding and Run Lola Run a nice view and experiement.
Btw Ecke have you seen Der Untergang ?.
-
Saw/Ecke
good to see you both. :)
Is Das Boot the one from which a video was made, with the guy with a robotic sounding voice - "maximum power setting, das boot!"? Hehe, my ex-wife always maintained that was the most depressing music video she ever saw! :lol
-
Hehe I know what song you're talking about... terrible wasn't it? :D
I'm not sure it was from that movie, be sure you are comfortably seated when yuo watch the movie, it's close to 3 hours long if I remember well. I saw it in german w/ subtitles... best seen like that I believe. Seriously, I recommend it. I'll buy it back from you if you are dissapointed.
-
If I was the bum, I'd use the gun and steal the money back :)

As long as you get the one that is in the original German (with subtitles). I've also seen the one that was dubbed in English. I don't like it.
-
Do all german secritarys look like lesbians? (i.e short hair)
-
Yes, they think it attracts the Nordic secretaries.
-
Hello Straffo...and of course Saw,
long time no see. Sorry that i dissapeared for a while. I'm busy in trying to get a new job. Hope i'll see you again soon.
<>
I missed it. I guess its worth to look for it.
Otherwise you wouldnt have asked.
See you mates,
Ecke

Sandman as an expert on the subject of German language (NOT) I have to say I've never heard it spoken to sound like a thing of beauty.
I am married to a German and her mother just happens to live with us. Either way I hear them rattleing away in German all the time....Usually complaining about me. ;)
-
Maybe it's not the German so much as Franka Potente. ;)
-
SIG,
You never told me you hooked up with your french teacher in high school :aok

Hossa Ecke, Meine liebling :D

Holy.... I dunno if it's because your humour is coming back, or mine is... but I'm sure finding you hilarious the last coupla days.
What are you doing this Saturday?

Hey!~ Don't buy DVDs guys, unless you just can't live without 'em. About two months ago "Venom" and I started a Netfliks account, and we've watched LOTS of movies for less than it costs to buy a few.
Guys, If you watch, rent, or buy movies, and you haven't been turned on to Netfliks yet, you owe it to yourselves to check it out.
If you're here on the forum, you're obviously comfortable with online services. Imagine every DVD ever made (except ADULT) online, indexed, cross referenced, and at your disposal in increments of three at a time, for as long as you like, for ~$22/ month...
The ONLY catch with this service is there is no INSTANT gratification. In other words, if you wanna watch the movie RIGHT NOW, sorry, gonna take two days to get it to you in US mail. But!~ In my experience with Netfliks, this anticipation has if anything, improved the experience.
Sorry for sounding like a comercial. Word of mouth, ya know. Kinda like when you tell your buddies about Aces High.

How much for the beef jerkey maker? Is the knife set included?
-
we once went camping on the badlands and there were a German couple next to us. they spoke good english and we had a blast. they would be talking in German and all the sudden all you would hear every other word "pot money."
Germans are kewl:aok

Freshman year in college I took German.
Prof was a die hard Hitler fan (and a great teacher). One day she was telling us how much she admired him for all the good things he'd done, like VW, the Authobahn, etc. A student mentioned something about "what he did to the Jews". I thought she was going to throw him out of the second story window.
While back, had three Lufthansa pilots come in to get checked out for renting. The one actual "German" instructor we had didn't want to come in. I just happened to be standing around, so they asked me to do the checkout. They spoke English very well, but would occasionally slip into German between themselves.
My German is extremly rusty, but I could catch enough of their conversations to keep up. Just couldn't reply in German. The first time they couldn't figure out something on the checkout form and started discussing it in German, and I told them the answer in English, they looked like they'd seen a ghost. Very nice guys and great pilots. Only thing I could fault them for was telling me to set the flaps.
-
I studied German in school because "Venom" (future Mrs Topjmy) spoke German. We were talking cute~ to each other one day when 'Mamo' sat down next to me and asked me a question in German. Man!~ I was suprised and embarrased. I dono why. With names in the family tree like Wagoner and Sauer I should have figured it out.
There's lots of German heritage in these parts. "Schlitterbahn" is just down the highway in New Braunfels, Texas. There's a great WWII museum a day trip away in Fredricksburg, Texas.
National Museum of he Pacific War (http://www.nimitz-museum.org/)
Aside: At the Nimitz Museum, I met some WWII vets, at the V+50 celebration, Sept 2, 1995. There was a particular TBM pilot that stood out in the crowd. In fact, he had Secret Service with him. His son, who happend to be Govenor at the time, introduced him for a speech comencing the celebration. :aok
@Nash hehe... I think Netfliks has an exclusion clause for Bufalo hunting Canucks. ;)
-
nash... I am working and babysitting my 2 year old granddaughter. I will not get to drive hot rods or shoot guns and might not even be able to sneak a piece in with the girlfriend.
I will not be kind to liberals as a result.

There's nothing like the Wagoner Fest in the Fall in Bayreuth, Germany. The many small town bier fest and of course Munchen "Munich to those unlearned". To walk in the cobbled stoned roads of Nurnberg in the winter as snow falls is great.
and Crystal Nacht.
Gross Gutt!

Laz do you speak any other languages besides "White Trash"?
Hmmm maybe German, Korean or Cantonesse and Mandrin dialects of Chinesse? Have you traveled the World and seen life outside of your mobile home?
Better yet.. drop your hat cuz it won't fit where your heads at.
:rofl

Beetle, go and get Das Boot now! IMO the best war film ever made!
Check out Das Boot at Play.com http://www.play.com/play247.asp?searchtype=allproducts&searchstring=das+boot&page=search
They have it at £7.99 and £9.99 (for 5.1 DTS version) - both Director Cut DVDs.
I'll have to check out Run Lola Run. The only other German film I've seen is 'Christianne F'. They should show this film to would be drug takers.... enough to put anyone off!
-
Laz.... say "Spanish" "S P A N I S H" ya might want to write this down.
-
we don't got a lot of them fancy spanish folk around here.... lotta mexicans tho. seen some spanish guys in a movie once tho. They are like gay mexicans right?

The smashing of Jewish owned stores... Starting in Berlin, Bonn, Stuttgart, Nurnberg, Munchen and Bremerhaven.... Not a good thing but something to remind one of the cruelty that came forth from it. Too some Germans it means one thing to others a hateful thing. Yes I know what it is.

OK, Guys - you talked me into it. I've ordered it off eBay at the "Buy it Now" price of £6.99. There were other versions for auction, but all were VHS and I no longer have a VCR.
I also downloaded that terrible song from Kazaa. The robot voice also says "1-2-3 techno" and "attention motormen". Still as depressing as ever. LOL
NEXX - do you have your own copy of this DVD? If not, you'll be welcome to borrow mine when I get it.

Thanks for the offer Beetle but I have my own copy! :) I hope you didn't have to pay postage on that £6.99 because the ones I listed included free delivery on a brand new copy and also the directors cut (much longer).
As for downloading the Das Boot theme, it seems you downloaded the 'pop song' version by a band called U-96. They had a hit with the song in the early 90s. If you want to research for the Das Boot theme, try searching for soundtracks or war films. The film score is a lot slower and more fitting to that of a submarine! :)

Yes I got the Director's Cut version. I did pay postage but only £1.75, so I'm out a few pence...
The song I got was indeed by U96!
Will check out the movie sound tracks later, thanks.

It's probably not on my all-time favorite movie list, but yeah... I enjoyed it simply because it was something new rather than the formulaic commercial crap that seems to dominate the movie industry.

If I remember correctly she was pretty hot. I was waiting the whole movie for her to get naked cause I figured most european movies have naked woman in them as a matter of principle.
-
Well... if you like Franka Potente, she's in the Bourne Identity, and the Bourne Supremacy. ;)
-
I got my Das Boot DVD today. The default PLAY options were English language with no subtitles. I'm a DVD relative newbie, and it took a while to work out how to select German language with English subtitles. Even though I don't speak German, I shall watch it that way for the immersive value. Yes, a very crisp language - I like it.
-
Wow, this started off as gay as possible, and Laz made it pry the funniest thing I have read in awhile here. When the gayness continued, it made it twice as funny. Wtg to all involved.
"I had no idea how beautiful it sounds when spoken softly by a woman."
Lol
Sandman, you are about the next Fab 5 shoe in. It would be impossible to be a bigger liberal Kerry loving homo. Seriously. You should go shopping with my wife, she has bad tatse in Fall fashion.

ah.. a new show... "sandie eye for the fashion challenged woman."
kerrie voters are just a little more "sensitive" than the rest of us brutes.
