In this picture both square A and Square B are the same color or are they different?

p.s. can't get the img to post, it seems the tags aren't working properly.

I copied/pasted into Photoshop to look at the color breakdowns of both the squares, and they are the same. Nifty illusion.

What's the illusion...?   I see a cylinder sitting on top right corner of a checker board with two of the squares labled 'A' and 'B'

The illusion is that whilst square "A" appears to be much darker than "B", they are in fact both the same shade.

A and B's squares look like different shades of grey (lighter/darker). Truth is, they are the same.

Can't be convinced....

It would be easy to convince you.... I would just have to crop the two squares and put them side by side.

I did that... and they're the same. Can't be arsed to do it again and try and figure out how to post it here... so you're on yer own.

Since I was being as unproductive as I could at work today, I took the picture into photoshop and did the same thing Nash did. They are the same color, but here is my issue with the whole thing. Unless you knew that was supposed to be the optical illusion or that you had photoshop you would never know. if someone was just looking at it and didnt have the ability to cut and paste or photoshop it they would just see a square with a shadow on it. Its a very interesting illusion when you realize the fact that they are the same color but I think its a poor set up.

If you squint your eyes where they're barely open, then block the two white squares to the left of the "A" square (using fingers is easiest,) you can see "A" and "B" squares are the same shade of gray.

When you see a cartoon showing an artist holding up his thumb, what he's doing is either making a handy frame for his composition, or blocking out a distracting element in the background.

Kinda like this:

:aok

Well, not exactly what it means here, but you get the idea.

Heh, my 1st instinct was to grab a pile of post-it notes. I stuck em all over my screen trying to block out everything else but the 2 squares.

It didn't work, so I was resigned to doing the much easier.... pasting them into P'shop.

Doing things the easy way just feels like cheating. Yet, I end up feeling much less like an idiot.

Angus, Check out this edit.  It clearly shows the two squares are the same shade:
