I was returning from a friends house yesterday and met a rural ambulance on a run. Both the EMT's were wearing industrial noise protection earphones. Do all EMT's wear these now when running the siren? Doesn't it make driving more dangerous for you? It just looked very odd.

Hiya rpm,
I don't ride an ambulance just a ladder company. Without seeing the hearing protection you described I don't know if they were gun muffs or noise cancelling headphones tied into the radio system. We use the headphones on our trucks both for hearing protection and as a talk around in the truck so everyone can hear the radio and any updates for the call we are responding to. The officer in the front seat is the only one who can transmit over the repeater and everyone else is just for in cab comms.
Hope this helps alittle.

RPM,
With a 120 decible siren in your unit going full blast, what do you think they will be hearing while driving? Nuthin but that d*** siren. Been there done that and have almost a 50% loss in hearing.
-
I understand the reasoning behind it. It was just the first time I saw EMT's wearing them and it looked strange. I figured ambulances had extra noise insulation. I wish we could have worn hearing protection during lookout watches in the fog. You think a siren is loud? Try standing about 20 foot below a ship's horn going off every 2 min for an hour. You can feel the sound travel thru your body. Tinitis is my middle name. :(

You think a horn is bad rpm? Try standing next to a girl when she discovers that you forgot to buy potatoes 5 minutes before her guests arrive and the stores are closed... Yeah, yesterday was fun.

I'd imagine she would have been several octaves lower than you when she started squeezing your nads. :D
Are you a true girly "man" now? :rofl

LOL Nils, You definitely had the worse scenario!

The average driver shouldn't wear headphones so he can hear sirens etc.
An Ambulance crew doesn't have to worry about that because they are the siren.

as a shooter I really like the new noise canceling and enhancing earmuffs... they actualy amplify weak noises and shut out any ver a certain DB level... I have several pairs.
they are so effective that gunshots sound like something on TV or a movie... beetle used my set when shooting one of my 44 mags and it fooled him into thinking that he could shoot without them....
I did not allow him to in case you are wondering.

Awww, was the poor man too weak to handle it?
j/k.
My dad took me out once to fire his 1911. I did a magazine with the ear protection on. I was then convinced that it wouldn't be so bad to do it without them on.
2 Shots in I turned to my dad. He mouthed something, I realized that all I could hear was ringing.

Never seen a set like those laz. Sounds uber cool. How much do those bad boys cost?
-
they run about 60 bucks for the mono ones that work well but are more "on or off" to about 150 for the seamless stereo ones. they work very well as you can have a normal conversation and they still block the sound of the gunfire. they make ones called "hunters ears" that look like hearing aids... musicians use em I am told.
laser... every time a noise is loud enough to make your ears ring it has caused some damage. My ears ring 24/7 Harleys, hot rods, guns and all those concerts by now dead rock stars.

I'm in the same boat laz. My ears never stop ringing. Straight exhaust, guns and rock n roll. It sure was fun tho.

I was impressed with the way those headsets performed. As I recall, I was merely curious about how loud the gunshots would be from the different weapons we tried.
I was no stranger to noise cancelling headsets, having used them for aviation purposes for many years.

I think they are a safety factor. I let beetle wear the only set because I wanted him to hear me as I was instructing him on handling (to him) unfamiliar firearms.
