Go get it (http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=3924)!
System Shock was prolly the best game I've ever played. The plot, the maps, the fights, the puzzles were awesome.
System Shock 2 had great reviews but my PC was too old when it went gold...then I couldn't find it. And now...MIRACLE!
I finish Tron 2.0 (great game too btw) and I'm on it!
PS System Shock is abandonware too, but you'll need a Win98 machine to be able to run it...

Yes really a great game and story along with HL and DOOM series.

Hmmm... it won't run on WinXP?

no it wont. uses DOS programs before it launches , so xp wont even run it.

SS2 is a classic. It runs on win2k so possibly ok with winXP. It needs some tweaking to get it installed but I think its worth the effort.
edit - just found this informative link which runs to 5 pages, so maybe getting it to run on WinXP is more hassle than I thought

System Shock 2 runs fine under XP. I only had to apply this fix (from this thread (http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=60930#d3d)) to avoid crashing when switching from general menu to game:
open the file cam.cfg with the notepad
add line safe_texture_manager at the bottom of the file
save and exit...voilą!
Have fun!
PS the download URL works again.

There's an update to the models and textures here:

They are talking about two different things from the sound of it, moot. It is freeware, but someone (i.e. EA) owns the intellectual rights - you can't use references from the game in your own game for instance. I suspect that is true for all abandonware, but others choose not to exercise it.
Places like underdogs.com are very careful with what they have on their site as regards copyrights etc.

I know. Thank god for EA.
