16.7 megapixels.  Is that a finer grain than, say 100 speed Ektachrome?

The pixel count has relatively little effect on the granularity of the image.  The number of megapixels is directly proportional to the physical size of the image captured.

Current digital cameras do not compare to 100 speed ektachrome.  For each pixel illuminated, two are wasted.  There is a new technology out now [don't remember the name, but I and others had a thread about it 6 months ago] which rivals film cameras.
