Title: What does YOUR desktop look like?
Post by: beet1e on September 29, 2004, 04:04:53 AM
With as many different personalities as we have in the AH community, and from so many different countries, I just wondered what everyone else has for their desktop.

Are you tidy? Do you have lots of junk?

OK, I'll start. This was mine this morning...

ROFL Beet1e with this gazillion junkware running in the background, you should still have the equivalent computing power of a Pentium 133 to run games :lol

Its the Atomium, I am sorry to say (I know you will be dissapointed) that it has nothing to do with France, it's one of Belgium's most famous architectural treasures (or so they say...)

It was built for the 58's expo.

hehe, those things in my system tray are mostly idle. I could still get fps between 60-75 in AH, even with VSync on.

Good thing Beetle has the mouse quick start guide up there for quick use.  That must come in handy quite often. :D

Nice 727 cockpit there Gixer,  was one of my favorite planes to fly in, quiet and smooth. I miss that aircraft.

hey Beetle , man you need to shut down at least half that junk in your lower right hand corner ... (It must take your pc a 1/2 hour to boot up ) and all those running programs are killing your performance .

I only have 4 things in mine
ati (video card )
fix it (AV program)
NV sound mixer
wingman stick

and sometimes my printer is there .

(P,s. Skuzzy would hit me if i posted my desktop )

I guess this would be a good time to ask this. Everytime I set a desktop background it will set until I restart computer. Then it appears at startup, but then as soon as it starts to load icons it turns back to dull blue. Any idears ?

If you have Windows 9x or 2000, avoid using Active Desktop and use BMP image for your background. It should do the trick.

If you have XP then i have no idea.

Sandman - a nice British theme you have there! DSOTM looks interesting... but I think I might pick "Animals" on the far right. The building shown is actually Battersea Power Station in London. I shall forgive you if you forget this useless tidbit of info within 5 minutes!

JAB - double decking - started with one of the CAT driver releases from ATi. I like it because my lines were getting long and beginning to meet in the middle!

Beetle, you may think all of that stuff is idle, but you are wrong.  at the very least, it is taking up RAM, at the worst(and most common), it is eating up cycles through interrupts.

Simple to check: run a benchmark, turn all that crap off and re-run the benchmark.

I have zero running at startup, and only the volume icon in my taskbar.

Is this same computer connected to the net? If so then where do you have the virus checker, firewall running?

And you don't run anything else yourself? My ISP does the same but I wouldn't trust it to block everything. So also run Firewall, online virus checker and spyware blocker.

do you really find this useful? Seems that you can look at one of them at the time anyway, and three screens (even LCDs) will take a lot of space on your desktop, so  there'll be no place for your toys :)

Also, doesn't this setup force you to costantly turn your head left and right?

Just curious.

Mine would win as the absolute most boring, if I could only post a pic.

The background is grey. I find grey is easiest on my eyes in dim/dark rooms.  No wallpaper, no tiles, just flat dark grey.

There's no icons on the taskbar at the bottom except the start button and the clock.   Nothing in systray at all.  Taskbar is grey too, none of that fancy blue color and it just sits there and doesn't auto-hide or play games like that.

4 ICONS on the main desktop--My Computer, Network Places, Internet Explorer and Recycle Bin.   They're on the left where they default to (don't want anything flashy like...moved icons).

My computer itself is probably the most interesting though.  I took all of it out of the case for repair work on the fans and never put it back together, so it's just a mess of cables and boards and parts and drives sitting on various levels of my desk and on the floor.  I ran over the power supply (it's taken apart too) with my chair once and it sparked a lot and shut down, but it still works ok.   I found that in its current state it runs far cooler than when it is together.   I'll probably get it back into one piece this winter since cooling won't be such an issue and it's getting kinda dusty.

So Usefull I actually have a difficult time working on a single display based desktop :)

What I find best is during a google search or while actually using it to earn a living.  For instance, while Googling, I end up with the google search results on the left screen, an IE window in the center for the page I'm current digging thru, and finally a third IE window on the right monitor to look at links from the web page in the center window.

Its also usefull while writing coad..  I'll have the source code running in center window, actual program running in left window, and the debug / local variables in the right window.

Here's a picture of how I have it setup:

BTW, the image is a picture of the Orion Nebula I took a while ago.

BTW2,  I have the room and hardware to add a fourth monitor, but where to put it, and I don't think my HVAC could keep up :)

Here’s a hint for some of you, toss a bunch of seldom used like shortcuts and Icons into a desktop folder.  It will work like a browser’s “Favorites” folder.
I have one for games, one for tools and one for repair (such as spyware removal programs).

We purchased the house from a rather elderly couple that had lived in it for 30yrs!  So yea, 1974 sounds about right!

Can I interest you in an Avacodo toilet with matching bath tub?  How about a Harvest gold set of appliances?

He's right about the writing code part.

I had two monitors on my desk at one point in time and I found it soooo handy to be able to write or fix raw HTML in one window....save....than refresh my browser in the other window to see if I got the correct results.

Who needs Icon shortcuts on the desktop? Note the Shortcuts and Favorites tabs ON the taskbar.

Btw, this is my system configured for an Aces High session.
Note the "Physical memory available" section. Also in the task manager I have only 12 processes + Aces High running when Im playing. THIS is how you get a low end system to run Aces High just fine. Cut out all the crap running in the background!

Yes.  I think that it's his best work ever.  The Wizard and Glass book was tremendous.

The Gunslinger was incredible, nice start to a series.  Told about the past and future without really giving too much away.

Drawing of the Three and The Wastelands were good.  Entertaining but not great in my opinion.

The Gunslinger and Wizard and Glass were the best so far.

I haven't read the rest yet.  I see the Wolves of the Calla, Songs of Sussannah, and The Dark Tower are out.  I gave up looking forward to new books in this series many years ago since Stephen King said he was retiring or whatever he was doing.

I see know that I will have to make time for some make up reading.

Soccer practice be damned

I'd love to post mine for yall but I cant figure out how to make it show up here.  Guess I aint as smart as I thunk I were.  Its a pic of F15s from the 131st FW flying CAP over downtown St Louis.

All these arguments about Iraq and Al-Qaida and whether the war is right or wrong........its easy to get caught up in it and forget the day that started it all.  Seeing fighters on guard over the city I call home is my way of simplifying things.

Sorry if its a bit off topic, just thought since I cant get the pic to post I'd share it with you anyway.

Hey eskimo,
Start a new folder in any directory tree on your hard drive. Name it whatever you wish. Example :shortcuts.
Open that folder and place all your desktop shortcut icons in that folder. Close the folder.
Now bring up your task bar and right click over any blank spot on the taskbar.
Click "Toolbars" then "new toolbar".
A navigation window will open. Navigate to the new folder you just created and click on it. (You will have to expand the directories using the  "+")
Click "ok"
Your new toolbar should now appear on your taskbar.
Place any future shortcut icons in the folder you created to add to the toolbar.
To delete a toolbar right click over the toolbar and click "close toolbar".
Good luck!

Thanks Sundowner,

That’s a pretty cool trick.  Same concept as a desktop folder only faster to get to and one less thing to close.
