Title: Fox News suppresses freedom of speech
Post by: ra on September 29, 2004, 07:57:28 AM
Fox News is preventing its 4 main competitors from being heard.  Congress should act now to protect the 1st amendment rights of those networks.

"According to Nielsen Media Research, Fox News averaged 1.8 million viewers, while CNN, MSNBC, CNBC and Headline News averaged a combined total of 1.7 million. The quarter ended Sunday. "

In other words... The other 288 million people in the U.S. don't watch Fox, MSNBC, CNN, CNBC, or HLN.

Why? FoxNews is pretty terrible most of the time I see it.

The only thing I can imagine is a need in the marketplace for a less left wing slant.  Other than that their anchors, reporting and commentary arent really all that good - especially for international news..

Sandy,

the problem is that the other 288 million don't watch anything but Fear Factor and Dukes of Hazard reruns ;)

Hardly amazing, of course the average Joe chooses to see the kind of news he likes to see. He couldn't care less if the news are true or not, It's entertainment.

According to the numbers, the "average Joe" doesn't watch the news at all.

You should get a job with CNN. This is the reason nobody watches and listens to their twisted liberal spin crap reporting.

Nobody is preventing anybody from being heard or supressing speech.

It's just freedom of choice in action.

I consider the news, as it is being reported today, to be a poor work of fiction.  I prefer Isaac Aisimov or Jules Verne for good fiction.

Exactly why we must gather it from many sources and media-yype, and discipher it ourselves for what is, and isn't the truth.

Hmmm,..take a bunch of lopsided sensationalism and pile it all together, then mull through it.  You end up with mulled-through-lopsided-sensationalism.
Whatever floats your boat.  You might as well toss in "The National Inquirer" to help balance things out.  It is just about as accurate as any of the top news reporting media.

Dunno how they "averaged" those numbers. Could be the average number of viewers at any given moment. If so, then it doesn't mean so few watch news.

Maybe we should just get our news from the Yourapeeins, nah, Bush can't possibly be Hitler.

I hate to say this, but I agree with Skuzzy on the news situation today.  Mostly sensationalism, poorly reported, and often with some bias or slant.

I get most of my news off the internet,  if it's on the internet, it must be true!  :rofl

actually thats a plus.

when it comes to people who watch FOX news, the studies have shown that the closer they follow the news and the more they watch, the more misinformed they become.

I watch em all, more or less, and the people that come down on fox strike me as victimized and vindictive, trivialized and minoritized....angry (aka liberal).  Fox reports largely the same things but with a splash of colour the others dont (I have noticed MSNBC trying to be more colouful as of late) and fox definately spins conservative, which is indeed a nice and  refreashing treat in the post dan rather, peter jenning, tom brokaw world of news.

And as far as who has a more educated viewer base does not impress me.  I do not have a degree and I have spent 20 years working with people who do and by and large, I have not been any more or less impressed with the quality of the person with a degree as opposed to people without degrees.  In fact, degreed folks tend to have more maligned points of view and are less open minded about everyday aspects of life.....in my uneducated opinion.

And what news is it that Fox news reported that wasnt true?

If Memory serves correct Dan Rather works for CBS and they (fox) has no affiliation to The New York times Or CNN

Fox may indeed lean slightly more to the right .But nowhere near  to the extent that the other networks lean to the left. (with the possible exeption of Bill ORiley)
So it would stand to reason that it would appeal to a wider audience then just the left.

After myself compairing the two for quite some time I have to say that I had to came to the conclusion that CNN leans so far left they should just rename themselves to DNN (Democrat news network)
They do not have exactly what anyone but a Democrat could call objective reporting.

Admittedly I havent watched a whole lot of CNBC but from what I have seen it just looks like a poormans CNN clone.

Who cares which way they lean?  Sheesh.  It's not news.  Call it for what it is.  Exploitation, sensationalism, oppertunism, anything but the news.
Hard for me to believe that people actually put stock in what these hacks say.  Amazing.

Skuzzy has a point. It is hard to imagine how screwy the stories are until you are involved in one. There has been some factual error in every news story I have ever seen that I had first hand knowledge about. A 100% failure rate.

Same here MT.  There was a local story here that was reported in 4 completely different manners.  3 were on television and the other was in the newspaper.
Turns out, none of them were even close and yet none of them made any effort to correct the errors.

Another story about a plane crash had the media reporting it was an asteroid impact.  Never corrected either.

It's all about ratings.  Just like any other television show, they take no responsibility for thier content.  Afterall, it is entertainment.

Unfortunately thre are a great deal of people who beleive what they see on the news as though it were gospel

And there can be arguements made about the accuracy of the gospel but thats a subject for another thread LOL
(one I suggest you squelch immediately if you ever see it)

The problem with which way they lean is is something is said enough its beleived. "Bush lied" is a good example

I know Skuzzy, it was funny because there was actually something about that a few months ago. Where a lot of people were getting their primary news from the Daily Show.

I can see why, atleast that show makes the BS funny and easy to digest.

very true, the amount of education often has nothing to do with intelligence.  life has shown me many times that when you educate an idiot, all you end up with is an educated idiot.  in fact some of the stupidest people I know hold a few degrees.

my comment wasn't about studies of what the more educated viewers watch, but on the fact that when questioned on current event issues, fox viewers are consistently more mis-informed than viewers of other networks and those who get their news through print or PBS.

not only that,  but unlike their more accurately informed counterparts, the more they watch and the closer they follow the stories the greater the FOX viewers perception of events veers from reality.

If you base reality on what you hear in any reported news, then you are not basing it on reality.  Just a reality check Cap.  :D

I like what you said in the first part about stupid people. May even steal it from you.

But.. I fail to see how Fox news  varies one iota more from reality then any other network. Or print medium for that matter as newpapers are notoriously innaccurate.
And probaly even moreso then their TV counterparts with the creative liberties they take.
And I know from personal observation they dont hessitate to take creative liberties

And who is to say they are misinformed? These other so called more accurate networks?

I think the real problem isnt News per say but the fact that jobs in the industry depend on ratings, and bad or slanted news gives the "Execs" the ratings they want.  If it dosent cater to the target viewer it isn't "newsworthy" or it won't sell, the only thing ganing in credibility is the weather, and then it is becuse you can watch the map and make your own guess.....

Think FOX News is the most one eyed and biased reporting I've ever seen, like watching some kind of old government run TV station. Funniest thing is that they find it necessary to keep on advertising how balanced they are. Only thing good about Fox especially Fox and Friends is the Fox girls.

Only international channel of news we get here which seems more balanced is the BBC World Service. Mainly because they often just read the news and don't find it necessary to make their own comments at the end of each story.

And when they have debates it's always with a broad range of participants from all sides of the argument rather then just a couple ex generals saying why they should bomb them again.

Of course Naked News has the best presenters and reporting of all.  :D
