Title: LCD Monitors
Post by: FBScud on September 29, 2004, 05:18:12 PM
I would love to get a 20" LCD Monitor for AH2.  I've seen one advertised with a 16ms response time.  BUT, I've read a lot of things about ghosting, etc., and comments stating that a CRT is the only way to go for flight sims for the time being.  Anyone have an LCD they love for AH2?

I have an NEC 17" LCD that I play AH on.

Works great.  I have had no problems with ghosting etc.

You can get 17" LCDs with fast enough response times for most gaming. (A response time of 16ms or less is generally going to be acceptable IMO.)

As far as 19" (or larger) LCDs go, they don't currently offer the fast response time of the smaller LCD panels.  I own the quickest response time 19" panel currently made - the Samsung SyncMaster 193P.  It's rated at sub-20ms response time.  I can play AH on it, but I do notice ghosting on the plane icons at close range.  That said, the monitor does have a very wide viewing angle for an LCD.  Generally the faster the response time of an LCD, the more restricted the viewing angle for accurate color reproduction.

Problem with all these 'response time' figures is that they are very subjective.  There is no industry standard and so you get ratings that may or may not be justified.  The good news is TOMS HARDWARE (http://graphics.tomshardware.com/display/20040923/index.html)  has finished development of a tool to get quantitative mesurements for LCDs.   This will be a welcome addition for sure!

I have a 19" LCD.  I have no problems with blurring or anything with it.  Ill post what it is later when I find the book for it.

I own a Dell 2001FP, 21" 16ms refresh and I have never noticed ghosting, and I play fast games. Also, the resolutions lower than its native (1600x1200) look excellent, I expected them to look bad,

Excellent display, goes for $680 if you look online.

Thanks for the info!  I'm really interested in the Dell 2001FP LCD, but all the ghosting experiences with LCDs kept me away.

Dell 2001FP user here - great screen - handles my photography work with Photoshop Elements and CS; sims such as AH, FS2004, and games like Call of Duty and Far Cry with no problem at all.

I would quite happily recommend it.

Ive got a 17" Dell E172FP Flat Panel.  I play AH, Call of Duty, WWIIOL, and several other fast paced games and have never noticed any blurring or distortion at all.

I'd recommend it.

I never notice any ghosting on mine. (Aces High, IL2, UT2004, Red Orchestra, Doom 3, Far Cry)

It has a faster response time (16ms) so there should be minimal ghosting even if you are very sensitive to it.

I belive Benq makes an excellent 19" lcd with 16ms. The test i have is in norwegian, but it is supposed to be great for gaming. My 19" Hansol lcd is good enough for me too, and it has 25ms res panel. Its only when i have a crt next to it that i really notice the slight ghosting.

The better the game, the less you will have "time" to focus on the ghosting.

Anybody using the Sony SDM-HS94P/B (19") or the HP f1903 (also 19") monitors? If so, how are they?

The new 19" Samsung SyncMaster 913N looks nice, it has got great reviews here in sweden.

It has a response time of 8ms,Contrast Ratio 700:1,Brightness 300 cd/m².

Samsung says it is the fastest 19" LCD now and should be great for gaming.

Anyone have any history with Samsung LCD´s good/bad?

I'll have to add in to the dell 2001fp, Ive owned mine for about 8 months, and its been nothing short of excellent. In fact, I took it to the aces high con this year, & everyone was amazed & impressed with the picture, resolution, clarity, & non-ghosting. it states 16ms responce, but in reality you cant even notice any change whatsoever.  I'm still impressed at what a pretty picture it gives, & is very often the subject of conversation from visitors.

and all of it done at max res, 1600x1200.

I have a Samsung 172X 17" LCD and it's a fantastic monitor.  No hesitation recommending them.
