Post by: Hawklore on October 01, 2004, 11:18:45 AM
Alright, just wondering..

Looking for a cheap trailer, thats reliable , light weight, and can take some jolts and bounces when going off-road.

I need a small one, and it should be able to fit two or three people comfortably..

Whats yalls thoughts?

Find you an older Airstream. They can be picked up fairly cheap and have no rivals on toughness and durability.

Hawklore,

What do you have to tow it with? If you do not have a pickup then a 5th wheel trailer isn't an option and you will have to get a "bumper pull" unit.

For a small unit I like the Nash / Artic Fox units. They are good camping style trailers and built stout. They also will handle colder temps without much problem. I don't know if they build a bumper pull (travel trailer) model or not.

The 23' Nash I had came with a queen size main bed, and a bed in the couch. Another bed could be made from folding down the dinette.

A used Airstream is hard to beat for durability. Avion makes an Airstream copy that's good as well. As mentioned, the towing capacity of your pickup will limit what you can choose.

If you want a super compact, Casita has a very cool one.

I believe Midnight Target is in the RV biz. He will probably have the best info for you.

Hey.. Offroad trailer?

Check out Komfort.

They make very high quality stuff. Not the cheapest on the market, not the most expensive either.

No this is not my plant, but they are owned by the same people as Airstream and us.

Best rout will be a bumper tow...

I don't wanna have to purchase a pickup..

You know those small tear drop shaped trailers? If those were the right price I would go with that, but they are like 14k my dad says..

The tear drop trailers are worth $$, they're considered classics if well-kept.

The biggest you could possibly go with a bumper tow would be 16ft.  Even then you'd be pushing it.  Bumpers are NOT made to tow travel trailers.  A 16ft. TT, such as my 88' Layton, had a tongue weight of 440 lbs. Too much for our Ford Explorer bumper. It has a metal bumper with a max tow rate of 3500 lbs.  Thats roughly 350 lbs in tongue weight maximum.

If you tow a trailer, no matter what size...do yourself a huge favor and buy a Class III or Class IV hitch and mount it to the tow vehicle.

Other questions you should ask before you buy a trailer...

Is your tow vehicle the right one for the job?

Does the travel trailer have electric brakes? (Most do, even single axle trailer..., you'll need to wire your tow vehicle to set up for electric brakes)

Tow vehicle: Are your brakes up to the task?

The very FIRST thing you should do is check the maximum tow rating of your bumper if you insist on being stupid enough to tow a trailer using a bumper.  Its in the manual of the vehicle. Check the maximum tow rating for the vehicle, that information should be in the manual as well, or on a sticker inside the drivers side door.

I think you may want a CASITA (http://www.casitatraveltrailers.com/home.html) . They are great little trailers and not too pricey.

Hawk,

NADA web site has used trailer prices listed both retail and wholesale, same as blue book for cars. Look under RV's for the listing by manufacturer.
