Title: Musician's...Equipment Question!
Post by: Golfer on October 03, 2004, 07:18:49 PM
While playing on Saturday night, I was moving around on stage and had my 1/4" instrument cable get wrapped around my leg.  I took a step to the side and and yanked the cable out of its soldering and right out of the jack.  Whoops...can you say "POP...BUZZZZZZZZZZZ!"

Anyway, this was just a cable I picked up because the price was right and now I'd like to get something a little more high quality (not necessarily will hold up to the yank-with-foot test) that sounds great.

Monster and Mogami cables have been thrown around.  I did a little googling and reading reviews at MusiciansFriend.com and would like to get a few first hand experiences with anyone and the cables that they owned or used.  Any assistance would be great!

Thanks.

Problems like that don't happen when you stick to playing the kazoo in the bathroom like me.  :D

Wireless. If you make the switch, playing with cables will feel like trying to fly AH using the keyboard.

Yeah...I've been browsing Musicians Friend's wireless section...I have that damn impulse buy feeling moving up my spine.  Must...Resist.

Although, its easier now to justify $25-$35 bucks for a 25-30 foot cable than it is to drop a few C-notes on something I know nothing about.

On the wireless note....AKG, Shure, Sennheiser and Nady are on the list.  The first mic I bought was a Nady ($19.99 included a 15' cable and Mic Stand) and I still have it.  It's lowlowlow end on price but worth every penny I spent.  I now use a Shure and it does as any high quality mic should do with no complaints.

What does anyone know about wireless systems?  (I feel as though I am losing the battle of keeping the money I have)

Yeah... wireless if you want to spend the money. Don't know much more about it than that I haven't heard any complaints. Rolex - no effect on the EQ?

No problem on EQ. I go into a Yamaha DG Stomp then cable out from effector to amp or house PA and have never had any problem. Sheesh, I hate cables. They're so 1974. :)

I tremble at the thought of the money I fear I will spend before the stroke of twelve.

Actually, I'm going to look into this because I'm interested...but like everything it will be very easy to spend too much money in very little time.  For now, its a new cable.

How many times are you gonna break a cable? Just buy a nice cable, screw the wireless.

George L cables - best ever.

http://www.georgels.com

You can make them yourself any length you need.

Stay away from the wireless rigs right now until the FCC/wireless manufacturers get stuff straightend out. Few weeks ago Direct TV bought  freq.range that encroaches on ALOT of musical / professional audio equiptment.
Right now the SHURE PSM 600s are pretty much toast for an IEM rig - cant use them anywhere without intereference now. Too bad - they sounded better than the PSM700.

if you do go wireless - get a high dollar system...
get one that doesn't have synthesized fequency crystals in it.
they sound horrible.

but...its wireless and fancy.  :)  No cables to break.  Besides...will your cable be destroyed if you drop it accidentaly unloading it out of the back of a car?  I think not...just another reason to get the expensive electronics.

If you care anything about your tone, stay away from the wireless.  The newer ones are better, but your tone will still suffer.  There isn't a better cable on the market than the Monster.  Take the extra money you'd spend on the wireless setup and get an extra pedal or two.  You'll be better off in the long run.

Golfer, you do loop the cable around your strap at least, right?
Title: Musician's...Equipment Question!
Post by: Golfer on October 03, 2004, 09:31:29 PM
Short answer...Yes.

I did experiment when I had an idea (ruh ro...duck!)

For flying I have these little pen/pencil holders that clip onto my kneeboard (or anywhere else) so I riveted one into my guitar strap about 6 inches from the leather loop that goes on my strap thingy-doo (im being technical) thats also my 1/4 inch plug.  I run the plug through that, it holds it in place and it gave me something to do.  It works, but I don't use it since I don't use that strap anymore.

I've been on the George L's website, I'd seen them at the music store but I never thought anything to ask since I'd not gone cable shopping.  After all, I have friends and I use whatever they have that I don't.  I think I'll roll off a couple 20 footers next time I am there.  I tried fixing this cable, and the soldering job was junk to begin with so for grins I took a look at the 'good' end.  Same deal.

hmm...maybe if I solder everything to everything it'll work!  (kidding for you electrical gurus out there...I dont want to blow up)

Wirless Sure SM58 was the best microphone I've ever had.  In terms of rugedness and sound quality.

I'm pretty sure you are talking about just hookin guitars and such up to amps....keep in mind this.

You are at a bar for a gig and you  are trying to do a sound check.  NOTHING WORKS.

You realize the wirless plugin's battery is DEAD and that was your last 9volt because you forgot to stop at the store on the way in.  Now you have to delay your entire show JUST TO GET A BATTERY and you end up paying twice as much because a Circle K is the only store open for miles that sells them.  THen its back to the bar and you still have to do your sound check.  The owners pissed and talking about cutting your check in half and people are leaving because they're not entertained......your band....is ruined.

Ok I'm being dramatic ;)  but to be honest I used a portable mic/headset for years and batteries were the only thing I've ever had wrong with them.  Sure's service department is top notch as well.

As far as I'm concerned....

The type of gig where yer cables gets twisted around yer legs, resulting in broken equipment, is one of the good ones.

Makes the replacement costs all worth it.

Guitar strings are more a problem imho.

I played a private party in Scottsdale in November, outside. Was cold for Arizona and my fingers went kinda numb....broke strings 2 times.

I never have pulled a cable out.

I didn't pull the cable out either...I ripped the cable from the plug.  Looks like I'm going to pick up some George L's cable.

I like these for a few reasons, not the least of which is if I do this again or somehow put too much strain on the plug, all I need to do is remove the plug...recut...reassemble and done.  They seem to have a lot of utility and the reviews for their quality are nothing but good.  Thanks for the help.

Still...those wireless systems are purdy!  thanks for the tip on the FCC issues, I was unaware.

Also on Strings...I don't know what everyone uses but I order online from MusiciansFriend.com (As mentioned earlier once or twice) and they sell at a pretty good discount.

I use Ernie Ball Slinkys on my Strat and just switched to Elixir Nanoweb Lights from Martin SP Lights after a friend praised his and wouldn't shut up.  Anyway, I order 10 sets of strings (5 each) at a time.  I do play a lot and change the strings on my acoustic once a month.  Anyway, the savings on Elixirs is pretty drastic ($12/set) on the website and I usually end up ordering a number of sets for friends too since Guitar Center sells them for around 20 bucks a set.  Just a tip for anyone interested...the discounts are just as nice for every brand out there.

if you travel a lot and need any supllies or expendable items (procell batteries, strings, picks ect.... try

http://www.toursupply.com

can set up an acount and just phone in orders with overnite shipping in emergencies. Smaller organization, better service than some of the big chains.

Wireless is great for gigs but not recording...Moster cables are one of the best.

What's your amp if I might ask?(and what music u play)

My amp is a Behringer Ultracoustic ACX-1000.  The way we set up, I usually lean it back on its prop legs and use it as a monitor but plug in through it because of the effects I can get for the guitar.  We have a Yamaha EMX8 something-or-another Mixer that we run everything else into to set up for 3 guitars, 4 mics and a keyboard.  The speakers we have are from a pretty nice home system that we steal from the basement of one guy's house and thats our main source of sound (though my amp is almost loud enough on its own to keep up with everything else) with mine as a monitor out front.

We play for the most part rock and alternative covers.  Our regular gig is a country-ish bar so I went out and learned about a dozen country songs to throw in during the night.  Looking at the list of songs I know how to play (Im sure I'm not the only one who writes them down because I don't know what songs I know if someone just asks) I've got 55 with maybe a third more I havent listed yet...ranging from the Beatles, Bob Dylan, 3 doors down, Dave Matthews Band, Maroon 5, George Strait, Rascal Flatts, Deep Blue Something, Green Day...ect ect.  Bob Segar is on the list, John Mellencamp, Hootie and the Blowfish, The Eagles...and so on.

As individuals we have 6 or 7 original songs each, as a band we have 5 or 6 that we play on any given night.

Right now I have a Martin Alternative-X that I'm considering selling to move up to a Taylor...anyone interested :)

Proco cables have lifetime warranties. I've had two since the late 80s that still work even after having been on the road several times. They also glow in the dark.

Was very handy when loading out and everybody was trying to claim someone elses cables as their own.

I remember Guitar Player magazine(or was is Bass Player) a few years ago tested about 50 cables for durability and even sound...They punished them by yanking them out of amp inputs and even dropped a ride cymbal from 4 feet to see if it would slice through and damage the cord...There were only a few that passed this test and the one that I remember was Monster Cables.

Nice setup Golfer..Sounds like you got a good thing goin'
