I have finally learned and gotten most chords down pat, along with quite a few songs, and would like to buy an electric guitar. I'm nowhere near a great player, so I'm not willing to spend more than $100 or so for one. I'm just looking for something that will get me started and get me familiar with an electric before I drop a lot of money for a high-quality one. Do any of you have any suggestions? or should I just stick with an accoustic for now?

Check Ebay. Lots to choose from.

100 bucks and yer looking at crap.
But for crap, the best ya can do is the Fender knock-off.... the Squier.
It's actually not too bad.

I've been looking around there. Nothing has caught my fancy, at least thats in my price range anyways.
Nash, what could I expect from a Squire, and what are the disadvantages of it against a real Fender?
-
For 100 bucks, you will get something worth about 24 bucks.
Save a little and get at least into the 3- 4 hundred range.

Nuke is right....
It never pays off to buy junk...
Wait a bit....

Alright. Thanks for the input. Looks like I'll save up a couple hundred more and then go shopping again.:)

Electric guitar gets run over by a car on the highway
This is a crime against the state
This is the meaning of life.
To tune this electric guitar
An electric guitar is brought in to a court of law
The judge and the jury (twelve members of the jury)
All listening to records
This is a crime against the state
This is the verdict they reach:
Never listen to electric guitar
Electric guitar is copied, the copy sounds better
Call this the law of justice, call this freedom and liberty
I thought I perjure myself, right infront of the jury!
Is this a crime against the state? No!
This is the verdict they reach:
Someone controls electric guitar.

Dating yourself Funked. :)

I used to play a long long long time ago a little bit. Was never really any good but it was fun.
Couple years ago my Said he wanted to try taking up the Guitar so figuring it might be just a phase that would last all af about a month we got him the Squire setup for Xmas.
Played ok but
Main problem with it is it doesnt like to hold a tune. Constinatly had to retune it.
anyway a year later he was still into it so we got him a
BC Rich BEAST complete with hard case, for just under $300

I used to play bass in a band for a few years. I can't help ya with 6 stringers but I can offer this advice. Do not buy cheap like the other guys have said.
When I was first learning I bought a cheap Fender knockoff and had to resolder most of the electronics back together again. What a PIA! Get yourself a mid level axe for now to practice your chops till you got it down. Turn around and sell or keep it then get a nice guitar. You can always trade up with what ya got as well. Check some local pawn shops and see what is available. You'd be amazed what people pawn for quick cash. You may find a fairly new Fender or Gibson.

Guitar center has some cheap Fender guits out there...
You can get a mexican built telecaster for around $249..not sure what the Stratocasters run for.
I would buy a new, less expensive guitar if a beginner. Looking for used guitars can be a pain. Put it this way - most musicians dont make too much money, so if selling equiptment -they can smell a new guy coming. In the end you might think you're getting a great deal, but actually end up with an overpaid piece of junk.
You can check online also. I wouldn't be too scared of ordering a guitar online, if you are a beginner. Although it is nice to be able to play what you buy, you can test a model out somewhere at a store and find one online. After you recieve it, you can take it somewhere to have it set-up or do it yourself. But chances are, if you're just beginning - you wont need to have it set up.
For a beginner I would reccomend a guitar with out a tremolo unit, unless you are looking for a Strat type guitar. You could develop tuning problems with tremolo if not set up properly.
I would go with a telecaster, or possibly a danelectro...
Stay away from the cheap Gibsons or epiphones - they'll never stay in tune if you don't know what you're doing. Most of those need the nuts replaced and recut. Even on their high dollar Les Pauls - need some work on them before they're playable from the factory.

Actually the Squires first production run guitars are great if you can find them. Believe they started in mid 1985?. Fender did them right. Nice wood, construction and parts. Sprayed on paint, Almost better pieces than the Fenders they're building today. Again - all a preference of taste.

I talked to a guy today at the pawn shop during lunch and he said he had a Gibson Epiphone Strat style that he would be willing to sell. He was kind enough to show it to me and it seemed to be in great condition and with all original parts. He said he wasnt sure of what year it was, but it seemed original. It had all of the pieces together and looked like it was well maintained. He didn't have an amp so I couldnt test it, but I said I was interested.
Heres the kicker. He said he was willing to sell it to me for $60 because he never played anymore and it was just taking up space.
Would this be worth it?

Tune it up with a tuner - form the best chord you can play - play the guitar for abit....now bend the strings abit - play the chord again - out of tune? if it is - dont buy it.
-
did Gibson make a "strat" copy Epiphone?

if they are incredibly old strings, OR brand new not properly stretched they will go out of tune on the best guitar there is.
