U.S. Spy Plane Crashes Near Base in Pakistan

MULTAN, Pakistan (Reuters) - A pilotless U.S. spy plane crashed near its military base in southern Pakistan on Sunday but there were no casualties or damage, police said.

The plane was returning from Afghanistan to a U.S. base in the small southern city of Jacobabad in Pakistan when it crashed at about 9:45 a.m. (0445 GMT), a few km (miles) outside the city in open fields, police and residents said.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known.

Since late 2001, Pakistan has made a few bases available to the U.S. military for logistics support for its war against Islamic militants in neighboring Afghanistan.

A Pakistani official, who asked not to be named, said three U.S. spy planes had crashed near Jacobabad this year alone.
