i fear the days of guys like these, are long gone.

they wanted to do it cause it was fun/adventurous/
and loved to fly, not what they got for doing it.

now days its what can i get for doing it.

last of the true great, adventureers, risk takers to further
mankind.

I'm not so sure about the "in it for the money" part. But today's astronauts are definitely not doing the "seat of your pants" style of flight that Gordo and his peers did. Safety restrictions would never allow it.

These guys were literally going where no man had gone before (except Gagarin) and were doing it all or nothing. Death was a very real possibility, much more so than it is today. Remember no man had EVER been in space as long as Gordo. He set the endurance record twice. Even after a computer malfunction during re-entry Gordo took manual control of his Mercury capsule and landed "Right on the old bazoo".

There are many reasons to celebrate Gordon Cooper's life. The most important of which is he was a very unique individual.

Awww that sucks..

I can vividly remember my mom calling me in from the yard and making me watch the Mercury launches. She knew history when she saw it.
