That 20yo hardbody that I am commuting to school with just got a 2003 audi a6-v8. She let me drive it home today (55 miles). Sweet car!!!!!

The Turbo Audi's are badly over-rated, but the V-8 delivers enough performance to live up to its billing. I think they run low to mid 14's. I don't really like the look...or the size (lack of)...or the pricetag of the Audi, but their performance is good.

You'd do much better with an Acura TSX for the money you spend. Better reliability, more features and nicer ride at high speed. Also helps that Consumer reports gave it a recommended review and I drive one myself - put 12,500 on it and I got the car end of June 2004. I'll swear by it in saying that it is the most tightly put together car I have ever driven - and I have the 6 spd standard and Nav option that has paid for itself several times over already.

We havent had a car now since before summer, and my gf wants an audi a6 thats no more than a couple of years old. Very nice cars indeed so she may just get her wish if we find one in very good condition that doesnt cost to much. It will have to be be a V6 tho :)

I was thinking of an Audi A3 for my next car. For the type of driving I do, and in deference to European fuel prices, I would get the 2.0 litre diesel version with 4WD. That DSG electronic transmission sounds interesting - anyone tried that?
But I was talking to a friend about this, and he had tried the A3 and didn't like the way it handled. He accused it of "threepennybitting" through corners, the threepenny bit being an English 12-sided coin until 1971 - I think you get his drift. I realise such things as handling/cornering are of less importance in the US, but on our roads H/C is essential. As driving goes, we're very much a SpitV/T&B country. Originally posted by J_A_B

"run low 14's"? What's that then? I'm guessing, but I think you might be referring to the elapsed time at which a distance of ¼ mile is passed, or do you mean 14 miles per gallon ??? I'm used to seeing acceleration quoted as 0-100km/h (62mph).
V8s, hotrods, long distances to cover... what are you guys going to do when the oil runs out?
-
Oh shuddup Beet you know what the frikkin 1/4 mile is. :)
-
I'm not too worried about the oil running out just yet. I still remember reading my school textbooks that were printed in the early '70's that told us how the oil would all be gone well before the year 2000.
When the oil becomes too expensive, we'll develop something else. That's all there is to it.
The Acura is a well-built car, but with a 4-banger it doesn't come close to the performance the Audi V-8 offers. In particular that honda 4-banger is notorious fo offering next to no torque, especially at low to mid RPM ranges.

A6 is underpowered. You need an RS6.

Hmm, a two-ton Audi with 450 horsepower. Even I would consider driving that thing. 400+ lbs torque at less than 2K RPM's; that's excellent for such a small V-8.
But dang, $85 grand, that kind of tempers its appeal. You could buy a house for that in some areas. Well...probably not the kind of house you'd be living in if you are the sort who seriously considers buying an $85K car.

punt for hottay!

You could buy a house, it would be just in the middle of the mountains surrounded by people pumped of thorazine smiling at you through a gap tooth'd grin.
-
Well at least they'd be smiling!

My pisspot 1.9TDi develops 236ft.lbs torque @ 1900rpm. Is that good?
-
Yes, it makes your car capable of rapid acceleration in the range of 5-10 mph. Congrats.

"My pisspot 1.9TDi develops 236ft.lbs torque @ 1900rpm. Is that good?"
I'd call that pretty good, especially in light of it being a small 4-banger. Probably makes it spin the tires pretty nicely when you want it to and I bet it takes off nicely from stops. Is it boosted or normally aspirated? Petrol or Diesel?
Compare that to the 166 lbs that Acura claims for the TSX (at a shockingly high 4500 RPMs mind you). That's definately an engine that relies on its high-end kick for performance.

166 lbs/ft and "performance" dont go together.

It's TDi, ie turbo diesel injection. Of course all diesels are injected! Yes, it would be easy to spin the wheels. That's why I'd like a 4WD again. Top speed is 134mph, so they tell me, and I get 47mpg in normal use.
