Title: Can't preload textures to video memory... why??
Post by: paulieb on October 09, 2004, 06:07:03 PM
My specs: AMD Athlon XP2200+
512 meg DDR
ASUS A7V-333
NVidia GeForce 4 Ti4200 128 meg
Win XP pro, SP2

In the video setup options, I can check off "Preload to system memory" but the box to preload to video memory is grayed out. When I'm in the game, my video memory usage is typically under 36 meg, but system memory usage is about 330 meg or so.  What am I doing wrong?

You will have to reduce your max texture size untill the checkbox becomes active. I have the same card and I have to go all the way down to 128 x 128 before I can preload to vid mem.

only preload into video memory if your running a 256mb card .

also you cant preload into bolth system mem and video mem at the same time.

you can preload a 128mb card .. but its not always an advantage , most of the time it makes things worse.

I have it loading into both system ram and video ram. Yes, it is a bit slower to load to video ram due to the AGP bus not being as fast as system ram.
