How bout this one without the white tail Kev?
This was the Spit VIII of F/L Barney Newman RAAF who flew Spit XIIs with 41 squadron where I learned about him. He was one of three brothers. Barney was killed in a 79 Squadron Spit VIII in August 1945 while on a strafing run when he clipped a wing into the trees and rolled in.
His older brother was a Beaufighter pilot who was shot down and killed in the southwest Pacific
The youngest brother was an air gunner on Bostons and survived the war but never really got over the loss of his big brothers.
I did this profile because of Barney Newman. The Cross of St. Omar under the windscreen was to remember his 41 Squadron days.

Thanks guys.
Dan - Colors, Dk Green/Ocean Grey over Medium Sea Grey?
Tried a quick test, think putting user leading edge stripes looks better than default weedy ones? (Look at original pic)
Obviously done on a Spit 9.

Hi Kev,
It looks great! It's standard RAF camo with the RAAF roundels and white leading edge etc.
For inspiration's sake I'm including some photos. Barney Newman obviously is a hero of mine. First image is of the 79 Squadron Spit VIII you just did. Lots of weathering on that one.
Second image is Barney Newman in the cockpit of a 41 Squadron Spitfire XII. The Squadron mascot "Perkin" is on the cowl.
Third image is of F/L Barney Newman after his return to Australia and joining 79 Squadron flying Spit VIIIs
Last image is one of the saddest things I have in my collection. I was given a couple books by Peter Cowell who flew with 41 Squadron. They were small wartime books about the RAF. When I opened one, there was an inscription from Barney Newman to his brother who was flying Beaufighters in the RAAF in the Pacific. The book was never sent because Barney's brother was shot down and killed.
Later Barney was killed as well as I mentioned previously. It was rather a sad reminder of the loss of those two brothers.
So in a small way, that skin is a bit of a reminder of the cost if folks pay attention to the story behind it.
Thanks for doing it.

Thanks Dan, nopoop.
Updated screeny I posted earlier, trying out a way of approximating the rain washed sides.

If HT and company accept that one, it's my Spit IX skin that's for sure.
Looks great Kev :)

Very Nice work Kev.
Great choice of subject. I have one picture of that squadron's spit with the code UP - U which I thought would be nice to have :)
Great Work.

Thanks for the comments guys.
Took a few days break, finished it up today.
Before I submit it - Dan, should I go with the squadron code letters as in your profile or the diff style in pic?

I'd go with yours. I didn't have the correct fonts at the time I did my profile and yours look darn close to what's in the photo.
I hope they accept it, as that's my kite from then on :)

OK Dan-
Redid the squadron codes, mine were too broad and the "S" was different. Also raised the ac serial number a little.

You do some really great work on these Kev.
It looks fantastic. The codes look right on the money I sure hope they accept it.
