Photoshop is so expensive because its the industry standard, and widely used by professionals. Check around, you can find educational discounts, or find an older version on ebay.

Educational versions are usually not the best but will do for most, I love photoshop, dont know what I would do if I didnt have it. I have been using it for about 7 years now between college and work and im amazed by how much can be done with it.

And most people(if not all) stick with the program and use it almost exclusively for their graphic arts needs. There is simply no better program. So considering how long most will use it, and the different upgrade fees, it probably works out to about $50 a year which aint bad. Now if one just wants to design one web page, they should look to photoman or whatever the shareware knockoff is called.

Buy and older version at a computer show for chump change, then get the upgrade to CS for $150.00 (ish). Or, depending on what you're using it for, don't bother with the upgrade.

Another option, as Nuke mentioned, PSP works just fine for the general populace.

Its expensive because theres alot more to photoshop than most people see,

How often does a home user have to drop a folder with a few hundrew pics onto a droplet command to batch process everthing with a certain set of operations?

I use photoshop everyday at work for texture painting etc for 3d, and even though I have CS, I could just as easily get away with a lower version (just nice to have the porche)

on a side note Painter is a real cool painting program and PSP is plenty good for most 'crop, add filter, colour in, save' people.

If you want expensive buy a licence for a 3d engine ;)
