Title: How much did gas cost when you began driving?
Post by: Ripsnort on October 11, 2004, 08:54:47 AM
Do you remember how much you paid for gas when you got your license to drive?

In 1976, I paid $0.65 a gallon for gas.

Today I pay $2.00 a gallon. In 1976 dollars, that is $0.61 a gallon.

Gas was more expensive then, than it is today (Given inflation)

So if I saved my 1976 Dollars I could buy gas today for 61 cents a gallon?

Heh, never thought of it that way.

Its more like this: Todays $2.00 was worth $0.61 cents then.  In other words, you probably paid more for gas then, given the inflation rate.

$2.00 is a bargain.

Started driving in Texas in '69. Seems that the average price for regular was around 25¢/gal though I paid as little 19¢/gal and remember seeing premium for as much as 37¢/gal.

That would be $1.26 today.  Ahh, the days before the infamous Oil Embargo....

The average price was $.21 and I usually was able to find some for about $.18 or $.19 when the "gas wars" were going on. It was also pumped for me and I got saving stamps as well for other things. For a while all the glassware my family had for every day use was from gas station give aways.

Then again the price for a double feature saturday matinee including at least a couple cartoons at the downtown theater was about $.25 to $.35 as well. Of course a new car was only about $1500.00 to $2500.00. But when you worked an entire Summer between school years and made $600.00 it was out of the question. That money had to last the entire coming school year for gas, oil, insurance, tires and the occasional clutch plate, not to mention paying for dates. :D

I think it was around .25 to .30 per gallon. It went up pretty quickly in the mid 70's though.

1980 my first (and light) motorbike I dont remember to well but think it was about : 2,50 NOK per L. (reason is it took 4 L and i could fill it up with a 10kr. If i dont remember to wrong)
now it is about 10.00 NOK per litre.

10.00kr = 1,4$

1 gallon = 3780 ml, or 3.8 L

1976,  59 cents a gallon.

Paid $1000 for my first car, a used 1965 Mustang with 35,000 miles.

Value of that car has gone up a lot more than the gas.

I remember that filling the tank on my first outboard cost me about 150 NOK back then, but i don't remember how large the tank was...maybe 20 liters.

Those were the really good days of waterskiing and fooling around all day during those never ending summers without anything to worry about at all.

Gas at the pump was about 65.9 cents in the late 70's. Of course I always went down to the drip well and filled up for free. Took a while for the motor to die after you cut it off, but who cares...free gas!

Gas was .75ish in the early 80's when I got behind the wheel,

we had a dart in the 70's as well. My brothers drove it I was a bit to young, but that car would not die. well over 100K and it went to florida and lasted there for few more years in the 80's.
my buddies car in NH rust out and droped onto its chasy but the engine still strated, You couldn't kill that engine if you wanted to.

I have always said that the slant 6 weould survive a nuclear war.

My best friend had a 67 Valiant with the slant 6. The car was indestructable.

Gas doubled in price almost overnight in '73 with the OPEC embargo. Remember well the horror of paying over 50¢ a gallon and naively thinking that surely it won't last.

Just checked, we are coming up on the anniversary of that embargo, it began October 17, 1973.

I can remember 12.9 during some of the gas wars in the late 50's early 60's ... and you got a free tumbler/plate and double trading stamps.
Then again I remember my first ever paycheck for a 40 hour week $37.85 take home! :D

about .50 to .60 cents a litre when I started driving in 96, so about 2-2.40$ a gallon Canuck bucks.
was 91.4 a litre when I filled up on Friday (about 3.70$ a gallon)

What cost $.50 in 1973 would cost $2.10 in 2003.

Gas is always 10-15 cents more expensive in Quebec, that combined with no right turns on a red light is a cash grab by the province.

I remember a gas wars in the early ninties in the States filled up a 3/4 ton van in Vermont for $7.

When i first started to drive i think it was a round 30-40 cents/litre.

Being metric it's easy for the gas companies to gouge, could you imagine if we were still imperial. They'd never get away with a 30 cent hikes per gallon over a one day period.

I had a 67 dart and ran it out of water and oil.  It seized up and I drifted to the side of the road, let it cool down added water and oil and left :)

I paid $150 bucks for that car and drove the heck out of it !
