I believe that error is Sound Card related.  Might try updating sound drivers.

Yes, that is DirectX telling us that it could not initialize the sound card.

Run DXDIAG (Start->Run->DXDIAG_), click on the "Sound" tab and run the various test to see if you can get more information.

hmm, it's saying no sound card was found. i went into control panel and system devices and it's showing up there. i will keep messing with it and see what else i can figure out. should i try to reinstall the drivers?

well i went looking to the sound blaster website and there isn't a driver for my card (SB Audio PCI). all it says is there are no updates available. where could i find the original? i believe the disk that came with my sound card went missing quite a while ago...

woohoo! got it working. thanks for the help everyone :)

what i still wonder, is why this driver went bad? i'm assuming that's what happened anyway. all i did was quit play AH, left the computer for a few hours for class, came back, went to start it up again and wammo! i have done this process many many times, so why should this one time cause a corruption? and noone else touched my comp in the meantime. i'm not the most computer savvy person so i guess i will always be left in the dark of such mysteries...

Sounds like your soundcard might be on the fritz.

If it was working, and then a few hours later wasn't.

Might want to invest in a new soundcard. Aren't that expensive. I think the original Audigy 2 runs for around 50?
