de·moc·ra·cy ( P ) Pronunciation Key (d-mkr-s)
n. pl. de·moc·ra·cies
Government by the people, exercised either directly or through elected representatives.
A political or social unit that has such a government.
The common people, considered as the primary source of political power.
Majority rule.
The principles of social equality and respect for the individual within a community.
I know I know the US is more of a representative republic...but the quote is more for mindset than anything.
My drive home from las vegas today I was listening to KFYI...an AM mostly conservative station....when I heard these two guys (based out of Lancaster, CA I think) talking about incumbents.
It was refreshing to know they were actually doing this theme called "political human sacrifice"
There focus was based on one republican and one democratic congressmen (from two seperate districts. I mention this because they were not rooting for one party or the other) who really did not have any competition in their upcoming election. The two rivals basically had no chance at winning. Even their own partys were not supporting them...only paying for their "entrence fee" to the election, $1500.
Well these two radio guys did a little research and found an astonishing fact........the incumbant re-election rate in the congress right now is at 96.1% THAT'S ASTOUNDING!!!! Another 3.5% and they'd be tied with Sadam's re-election.
They went on to talk about how BOTH parties....repubs and dems. are "working together" to redraw the congression districts based on a computer generated voting model. Since the last election, these two congressmens distric's percentages of their current parties have increased by as much as 8%. Basically they like the way things are and don't care to change it as long as the current people stay in power.
AND THESE SAME PEOPLE VOTE ON THEIR OWN BENIFITS AND PAY RAISES.
Sorry I'm just kinda sick of my govt. and politics in general as of late. This kinda hit me today on I15 and highway 58 like a ton of bricks. Bush to me is better than Kerry.....but truthfully neither one of them is that great IMHO. I've been telling my friends that don't like Bush enough to vote for them but HATE Kerry to vote for Nader. The same response is "but Bush will win" and my response is allways "you might find you have something in common with somone else. Why vote for somone you don't agree with just so the 'other guy' doesn't win?"
Anyways that's my political rambling for the weekend. Feel free to discuss

Could you imagine a "congressional Chatroom"
That would be interesting to have my REP at my fingertips....well at least his office staff.
If I had some money to throw away....and I wasn't on active duty. I'd run just to rock the boat.

You couldn't run... Your opponent would come here and grab quotes and then present them out of context.

If you really want to make a protest vote, and as long as you aint voting for Kerry or Bush anyway, vote for Badnarik.
Votes for Nader are gonna look habitual and hippie-like.
Enough votes for the Libertarian party, and people may sit up and take notice.

good thought...but the whole idea for a "protest vote" is absurd. Why can it not be just a "vote"? People are lemmings this is certain....why not have more than just 2 canidates. It just sucks it has to be this way.
While I listened to the show my thoughts drifted to my first vote. The first time I ever voted was actually for Perot! Beleive it or not I saw one of the guy's MANY tv broadcasts and I beleived in what he was saying. A more financially responsible govt. WOW WHAT A CONCEPT. We live in a day and age where our govt. spends $300 for a plastic airplane part that costs MAYBE $2.00 to manufacture.
But in the end, clinto won the elecection. Did I throw my vote away? I don't think so I voted for who I wanted to fix the problems of the day. Many say Bush lost because Perot ran. Not so different from Nader/Gore 2000.
Election is 22 days away and I can't wait for it to be over.

Dennis Miller voted for Perot....
You're in good... er... lets just say that you're in company.

So, Gunslinger... what do you think of your representative? Do you even know who he is or what he does for your district?

She's great! Sleeps a lot more than her older brother did. I'm sure that will change for the worse very soon.

It is called a Gerrymander, welcome to poli-sci 101 Gunslinger.
-
is that the majority must be happy with the way things are, and are not inclined to make any great changes. If they were, there would be a shift in the power equation, or the rise of alternative candidates that have a real chance of getting elected.
I don't think it's gerrymandering.
