That gave me vertigo just watching it.

How many times have those guys bonked their heads on the first flip after they jump?  Some of them were awfully close.

Sounds like the South Africa one where he went INTO the waterfall scrwed him up pretty bad

"It's what's known as a life experience," says Corliss, describing a jump from a cliff in South Africa where he broke multiple ribs, his back in three places and sat immobile in freezing water for an hour awaiting rescue while crabs ate the flesh around his back wounds. "Not all life experiences are fun, but I wouldn't change it for the world."

He has a theory for everything, all delivered at top decibels, and, because of contracts with film and television producers, makes more money than some physicians.

Thx for the great video deSelys!

we have here some local Base Jumpers, they jump close where we
Paragliders start:

This is the view you have shortly after start, you cant Imagine how this
looks in real, it goes dooooooown verticaly aprox 1600m :D
(http://www.onpoi.net/ah/pics/users/708_1097791400_alp03.jpg)

And this is the view you have seconds before starting with the paraglider.
Better dont stumble here while starting! ;)

I dont know if i would risk a Base Jump.
We had last year 2 death's, one because a chute malfunction
and the other crashed into the mountain shortly after the chute opened.
Its very very risky here, maximal 2 seconds free fall or so.

ive done one total. with a buddy from military who is now a stunt man. for my first one he took me to bridge. said thats safest most room for error just after your toss and deploy. no matter which way you pitch if your control isnt perfect you have  a few seconds to steer back on safe course. i got trained in mil freefall years ago and i dont jump every weekend like some guys do. what impressed me most was that guys body control through all motion and his "fine flying control" when freefalling. if youn watch his calves from his helmet cam when hes jumping angel falls look at the way hes "flying" along the face of the cliffs. hes very smooth always totally in control. ive been watching that vid about three times a day thanks again delsys. :)

No thanks needed! :)

Corliss has 1000+ base jumps and indeed he looks like totally at ease and in control during his freefalls. I'm amazed by his attitude awareness after so many flips and spins. He throws away his pilot chute at the right split second in one smooth and fluid motion.

Congrats on your BASE jump, An. WTG!

I'm more than seriously attracted by BASE jumping myself and I would like to get my BASE # before my 40s (few years left). However I plan to do it the right way:
- 500 skydives at least (still a long way to go)
- find a mentor, buy the gear
- bridges jump first, then some B, A and E.

I probably would have to travel a bit as I can't afford to make illegal jumps.

Antenna jumps don't  appeal me much. Most BASE jumpers climb live As which are radiating in the Kw range...this is not healthy! At least one BASE pioneer died from cancer probably caused by too much exposure to microwaves (of course, legal A jumps are probably made from inert towers).

hey Mini D, maybe thats why i prefer to start with an open Chute,
circeling with birds around the clouds for hours.

Base jumping is more for short & turbo shoking feeling ;)
maybe similar to bungy jumping, ive jumped once from 70m
it was fun yes, but nothing i would do on a daily base.

btw. my GF dislike flying (all kind)
before i go out flying there is allways this discussion with her ;)
I doubt she would accept more flying, ...more dangerous flying.

You're right MiniD, and more people have fallen since this article.

However, even if driving a car is safer, road accidents make victims everyday. Is it a risk you're aware of? Do you think about it every time you start your car? Or do you just shrug it and forget about it?

We are all going to die no matter what. Most people forget about it. IMO, when you're aware of it (like BASE jumpers do), you'll take much more joy from living.

No deSelys... it's not the same.  That incident jumps to mind for some very specific reasons.  The reason those seasoned veterans were jumping off of el capitan that day is that Yosemite park officials were siding with base jumpers in front of the media to show how "safe" base jumping was and how they supported it.  It only took 3 jumps before a taste of reality set in.

I personally figure death is inevitable, so there's no sense in worrying about it.  I also feel there's no need to drive by death flipping him off to see if I can get a rise out of him either.

Ok MiniD, I see your point.

What irks me a bit is that for the press and, hence, for the public, BASE jumpers are just irresponsible daredevils with a death wish.

Yes, BASE is really dangerous. However, most BASE jumpers

1) know the risk they are taking and evaluate them before jumping.

2) don't endanger anybody else than themselves.

In our western society where risks are reduced  to the point that everybody forget about them (although they aren't nil and probably never will be), some dangerous behaviours are much more tolerated than BASE jumping. When some posters on this board claim that they have reached very high speed with their GTO or Impreza on the open road, very few of us are bashing them for the risks they have taken for themselves and the other road users. (That being said, I've done it myself in the past but I've learned better since.)

Besides, the article contains some important errors:

-BASE is not illegal everywhere in the States. AFAIK, the Perris Bridge in Idaho is permanently open to BASE jumpers, while some national parks are open on certain days for BASE events.

-The death of Jan Davis has some roots in the fact that the jump was illegal...check this link to find out why: BASE international fatalities list (http://www.basefatalities.info) (Edit: I just saw that the problem is described but not well explained in the article)

But before you click on the link, ask yourself how many people over the world do you think have died in that sport since its beginning in the 80s... you'll probably come with a much higher figure. You'll also see that a non negligible percentage of the victims were people who tried to jump without any former skydiving experience and counseling...

Don't forget neither that at the first days of aviation, flying a fragile construction of wood, wires and fabric tragically underpowered was even more dangerous than BASE jumping nowadays. Without those pioneers, where would we be today?

At the end, let the BASE jumpers do their stuff. Most are aware of the risk they are taking and accept the possibility or death or serious injury. Their tolerance of risk is probably higher than the lambda citizen, but that makes them not criminals.

deSelys, the Fatality site you posted, i think i found the 2 Base Jumpers
who jumped to death at Engelberg (swiss). see my pics above.

must be:
#69 Lukas Knutsson, October 11, 2002 Cliff Jump (Wing Suit), Engelberg (swiss), Impact
#70 Robert Hinden, January 11, 2003 Cliff Jump, Engelberg (swiss), Wall Strike

i thought they jump maximal 2 seconds there, now i read up to 5 seconds free fall!

Yah those guys got balls.  I use to be a parachute rigger in the Air Force, and I've seen chutes fail before during normal drops/jumps.  Let alone in a situation like this.

About an hour from where I live, they open the New River Gorge Bridge one day a year for base jumpers.

Its a HUGE event in that community from what I understand.  Something like 200,000 people show up to watch and participate.

The last tune they played was great...  String quartet (?) playing Metallica's "Nothing else matters".

The jump where he got sucked into the waterfall...  Damn.

GreenCloud, you can try to get it at http://www.skydivingmovies.com. You'll have to register but it's free and you won't be bothered by spamming afterwards.
Look in the BASE section and order the movies by rating (descending order). It's one of the highest rated movies. The filename of the movie is jeb_2003big.wmv.

I hope it'll help.
