Title: Help
Post by: paulobrien6969 on October 13, 2004, 07:32:30 PM
since the latest map i have been getting lag for instance
i got ho'd and none of the hits registered till i came out of the loop i was in(like 5 secs or so l8r)
i have a cable internet connection which is 128kb
and i have never had lag before
i thought it might go away but after logging a few times and also leaving it till the next day it made no difference and is making shooting nmes very hard.i cant see it being my sp because the only reason i can think it would be them is that there system is very busy   but its like 3am here   so theres no way thats a busy time ,and besides its never been a problem whatever time ive been on b4
i have no viruses or spyware

any suggestions gratefully received

Today has been a rough one for internet for me.

Each time I surf to California there has been a huge delay.

I'm thinking it's just a temporary thing.

I'm guessing that there is some trouble in the works somewhere thats slowing things down a bit.

sorted the problem:)
went through all the things that have run or been installed in the last week , and the only thing that ive changed is the fact i installed windows xp service pack 2
i have now uninstalled it and the lag problem went straight away.
now im no pc genius and i have no real idea why this would affect
my internet connection, but it did!
must have to do with the advanced security of sp2?
something to do with filtering the connection?
anyhow its fixed   im happy
just dont install SP2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i was told it was trouble
and since my os was fine b4 it, if it aint broke dont fix it

PaulO

SP2 will install a firewall during the installation process, just be sure you select NO firewall. I understand that can cause issues.

now ive done a ping check from a site and it came back as 90,
in ah2 the ping for me is between 120 and 160+
now i havent really taken much notice of ping before but as far as i can remember it was running at 110 to 120 so it running up to 160 is a new thing

ping isn't as relevant to your connection as packet loss is.

Read Skuzzy's stickies in this forum, run a ping plot to the IP address he gives in the stickies.

And then report it here.

Actually, that is a respectable ping plot.  If you feel you are lagging badly, it could be something running locally on your computer, such as Windows Media Play 9 or 10 (even when it is shut down, it has a background process that kills your performance in online games).

Of course, the best time to run a ping plot is immediately after/during the occurence of perceived network problems.

Skuzzy, do you know the name or identifier for the this background process of wmp????     ie "svchost.exe"

It is hidden and does not show up in the process list.  The only way to disable it, is to remove the entry from the registry, which also disables Windows Media player.
It has been too long since I discovered this and cannot remember the exact name of the file in the registry.

There a number of things Microsoft runs in the background that do not show up in the process list.  Go figure.

svchost is a pseudo program which must run (handles a lot of the resources involved with each process).

i use enditall before each time i play ah and have not installed anything apart from windows updates in the last few weeks
this problem suddenly happened when the fester map came on so i thought it was that causing it but the problem has continued
i also cant remember the last time i used wmp but this has also never caused a problem before
ive defragged ,run norton, run adaware and got a higher connection speed(700k, i l8r found out speed makes no difference)
im managing to play, but im not having as much fun because of nmes warping out of my sights:(
thanx for the reply
and if you think of anything else i would be grateful

Ok, now we are getting somewhere.  See that second hop?  It is showing a significant amount of packet loss.  Everything after that is moot due to that hop.
You need to shoot a copy of this to your ISP and ask them what is going on.  Packet loss that high is going to cause no end of problems with many things.

At least you know where the issue is now.

well im considering changing my isp
ive just read a few articles on ntl and i already knew they are dodgy as
most stating the fact they have bad connections bad ping lost packets due to ntl having more people using 1 cable than should be in other words oversubscribing
if when i get through to ntl they blame my pc (which i expect them to)i will change my isp    any suggestions?(english based)
