Post by: lazs2 on October 14, 2004, 11:24:08 AM
Took the day off.  Loaded up a 8mm 98k mauser that has never been fired... a mini 14 to see if it will feed wolf ammo... a Kimber 45 and a Ruger super  Blackhawk 44 mag... also brought along a Smith 340pd 12 oz 357 for gee wiz factor.

hey... it relaxes me.

watch out for the mini, the brass is ejected with such velocity it could serve as a second line of attack!

Stay safe

Have fun.  Going shooting this weekend with the Germans.  Bringing our stuff - 9mm SMGs, M4s and 870s.  Get to check out their toys. some sniper rifle (don't know what).  The G36 I think some other stuff.  We call it laision work.

Wish I knew of a place around here where I could do some shooting (other than the indoor range). When I was young I could walk out the back door for a half mile or so and do all I wanted. Anyone from the Dallas area do any outdoor shooting on public property?

If its your first time at the range Lazs, you should know that some firearms can give you a small kick in the shoulder or wrist.

The best would be to contact someone at the range that has some experience and ask them to show you (unless you have been in the military and know these things).

Enjoy, shooting can be fun :)

I took a video cam with me a few weeks ago when I was in Washinton State.

It was fun shooting cans and jugs with my M1 Garand.

They would go FLYING!

I am going to make a cool little DVD of it.

lazs..we have a great shooting range between grass valley and Beale AFB  300 yd  range..no Range Hall Moniters so you can shoot as fast as you want

I have now shot about 1k of wolf rounds thru my mini14..No problems at all..But a few of my 30-40 round mags eject shells not fired yet..They "slip " out..iT really pisses me off..So I need soem factory made ruger 30-40 round mags..hopen to see them in gun stores soon..for less then $40 a piece i hope..

nielsen.. that was a joke right?  yes... firearms can kick.

greencloud.. I shoot at my brothers place or at yolo sportsman in Davis.   Would love to try out your 125 shifter kart... let me know when you are in the Dixon area.  I am the worst shotgun shot you have ever seen.

Drove my 468 elky so was not particularly safe but... I survived.

ra.. the mauser is a 1945 98k from mitchels mausers.. they are on the web.

I didn't think to bring a camera.

did I miss anyone?

No joke at all.. Some regular rifles can give you a kick in the shoulder.

Did you have a good session, and did you go with an instructor or solo?

Ra,

Check here: http://www.mitchellsales.com/

Girlfreind and my local gun shop Reed's in San Jose CA conspired to give me one for last christmas. They have 98K and Yugo 48 in grades from collector to service. 98k will cost you in the 4 figures. Yugo 48 $150-500.

nilsen...I have shot hundreds of thousands of rounds in my life.  I assumed you knew that I shoot regularly.   I went to a range so there was a rangemaster there to make sure no one did anything dumb but the pistol range was pretty deserted so I was left to myself for the most part.

I am allways willing to learn about firearms but am fairly competent at this point.

I was shooting some guns I hadn't fired yet and some loads that I had cooked up.

I got my old worn out 44 mag super blackhawk to shoot 2" groups with a 250 grain cast lead semi wadcutter ahead of 12.6 grains of AA#5   The kimber was, as usual.... flawless..   as expected, firing the 340 pd brought a crowd around.   No one took me up on my offer to shoot it tho.   It cut my thumb on the 5th shot.

Nilsen...

are you oblivious to the fact that Lazs seems to know exactly what and how to shoot, and appears to have been shooting for a long long time, every other word he posts on the bbs appears to be about guns, and yet you appear to think this is his first time shooting? :rofl

Thanks Bustr.  Yugo and Turkish ones are available everywhere.   I'd prefer a German one, though they may cost more than I would pay.

Oh, you are an expert :) Looks like you have shot alot more than I have. (Im guessing aound 1000 rounds) The last chapter had too much technical info in it and in the "wrong" language, but I trust you.

expert?  I know a little, never considered myself an "expert".  back when I was growing up everybody shot..

It allways amazes me when I see a grown man who has never fired a gun for fun.

course... I am amazed when I see a grown man who is a liberal.

nilsen... what do you mean?  largest caliber, most powerful energy wise, fastest, or most recoil?

in that order... Probly a 70 something caliber flintlock somebody had me try once...  then, a 458 win mag.  then a hot loaded 22-250 and then it would be a tie with the 458 and that stupid little j frame 340 pd for recoil.

I would shoot anything I had or anything anyone would let me shoot.

oh and furball.... It looks like a go to take my drivers test sometime real soon.

Good luck!! remember... don't use too many rev's or drop the clutch too fast!

At least i have you beat when it comes to caliber then lazs even if you have fired more rounds

Post by: lazs2 on October 14, 2004, 04:30:50 PM
that is really good advise furball!  just today I was practicing and I had the revs up too high and let out the clutch too fast... fortunately the tires just spun for a couple hundred feet and I didn't stall it.

nilsen... probly... I havent fired many big guns except I did get to help fire a cannon once that shot a 4 lb ball.  some of the guys were shooting cement filled soda cans too.

and about the amount of rounds.... I think I fired about 300 just today.

Lazs,

how do you like the Mitchells Mauser?  They told me they would shoot 1 degree groups..  they worth it over some of the cheaper ones?

1 degree groups

Probably meant 1 minute of angle groups, approximates to 1 inch at 100 yards.  Very good accuracy for a surplus main battle rifle, fairly crappy for a precision rifle.

Hey Monk, what unit/company are you with?  I'd be interested in your opinions regarding the G36 as well, especially with regards to its "uberness".

Ya  MOA...

Not bad for a 300 dollar surplus rifle in new condition.  wasn't sure if the salesman was being honest though.

Largest I've ever launched was a TOW2, about 130mm maybe?  But that a guided missle not a gun...  does a 25 mm chain gun count?  or 120mm cannon?
Title: ok.. going shooting.
Post by: lazs2 on October 14, 2004, 05:55:10 PM
well... I couldn't do that at 50 yards today with the mauser and surplus ammo... well... I guess about inch and a half maybe... good enough for open sights...  I'm no rifle shot.   I think the Garrand is a little better with surplus ammo.

I don't see why the mauser wouldn't shoot an inch with a good scope tho.  Seems as well made as any german one I've seen and a hell of a lot better than most.

you guys win on the big guns tho... I couldn't afford to shoot any of those even if they were legal.   you should try a 458 win mag or a 340pd...

sorta like the difference between going 400 in an airliner and going 60 in an ultralight I would imagine.   I doubt any of them things kick any more than the 458 or pd.
