i by default hate all ads and commercials. i find them to be insulting. i was looking at yahoo news and there was paid ad for kerry that said "kerry finishes strong and is ready to lead". if it was for bush i would be just as offended and ill assume there are some out there for bush.
the line of thinking that advertisers take strikes me as insult. the very thought that by showing a picture of something and some words will make me choose or buy or make up my mind one way or another i consider it demeaning. its ad people saying they think majority of mankind cannot think for self. tv ads no better. some will say "ads pay for tv its a way of life" i say down with it all. no ads and dont pay stupid vapid pretty boy and girl sports anchors and "reporters" who all read from cue card six figure salaries. network higher ups making millions that ad revenue pays for. for what? so they can all copy the latest hit idea and give me nonsense like "wife swapping" and some more "reality" tv.
if a commercial is really funny if it makes me laugh out loud i "give it a pass". that means when the media kings are thrown down and all the anchors reporters ad people digging the ditches before they kneel in front of them ill commute the sentences of the ad guys who made commericals that were damn funny even if there was never a chance id buy the product in the ad.
if im going to buy a car im going to read up on cars of type i need. then im gonna test drive them. if im gonna buy some beer im going to buy a beer that i think tastes good. every once in awhile like every tuesday and thursday ill go buy a bunch of beers ive never tasted and try them on for taste. im not going to drink beer x because two potatos get paid a grand to wear "almost" clothes and slobber over some fat guys in a sports bar they wouldnt enter if you offered them ten grand. i dont give a flying screw if someones truck is "like a rock" according to some country singer. if im sixty five and cant get it up im not going to ask my doctor for "pingomax" by pfizer. im going to go to thailand and find wife number four and shell be at most one third of my age. that should solve matters i think. i dont use sweethearts and if my date does i dont need her to hear about it either. shes not watching the show with me as part of her sweetheart training program. i dont give a damn if right now you can buy all you can eat deep fried fat with shrimp bits inside at red lobster for $9.99. if im going for fried shrimp im going somewhere within a half click of the ocean. and dont tell me any group of people ever looked half as happy as the jerkoffs in the commercial because they were eating at red lobster. they need to open up a red lobster in gitmo to feed the detainees. theyd all crack within the month.
nine of every ten sportscaster is worthless. some guy stating the obvious like "hes got a strong arm so he can throw the ball far" or "its hard to defend against someone who is seven foot two and three hundred pounds if you are only four foot six". keep madden and a couple of others for nfl. keep most of the former nhl player turned caster. keep most of the sports center guys because they dont take it all to seriously. take the other nine of ten and fire their tulips and get rid of the commericals and the commerical game stops.
im tired of little blond girls who eyelash batted their way through all the "hard" courses on the way to a communications degree and have probably spent one day a year outdoors that being a fourth of july bbq on some nyc apt patio tell everyone about the war on terror. go the sports route and hire some guys who have been there done that and let them talk about it not read cue cards with a chirpy smile. "kill your television". WHO IS WITH ME?

The comma is your friend.

I mute commercials. I have a list, and I'm checking it twice.
I'm going to kill all commercial creators, because they aren't nice.
I'll slay them in their beds, shoot them in their heads.
Kill them where the stand with my ****ing hand.
Crush their puny rib cage in a bloody fit of rage.
Stab them in the eyeballs, wiping them all over the walls.
This I will do, because they make me spew.

The unfortunate truth is that advertising wouldn't exist if it didn't work.

Why do you hate capitalism?
-
When it comes to network television and most radio, you're not a consumer. You're product.
-
That's one of the coolest things I've ever heard. But I have no idea what it means. Sand - elaborate?
-
The networks are selling your attention. They put on shows that you'll watch and then the fund these shows by charging for the advertisments that interrupt them. Top rated (most watched) shows gain the highest advertising dollars.
So... when it gets right down to it. The networks are selling you to the advertisers.
If you pay to watch or pay to listen, you are a consumer. If the shows you watch or listen to cost you nothing, but are subsidized by advertising, you are product.

Ah! k get it.
True.
Nicely put.

i dont hate capitalism. i hate advertisements and commericals.

Why do you hate free speech?
-
I don't get angry about the standard network business model. I understand it's part of the deal.
That said... If I subscribe to a service that is commercial free and then they start adding commercials to raise their profit margins, I get a little bent.
As for satellite radio, XM comes to mind. Their advertisements say 100% commercial free radio, but that's not entirely true. Some of their channels do indeed have commercials.

i love xm. best "fun" money ive spent for as long as i can remember. the shocker is going back to normal radio for even an hour when youve been using xm or your own cds. i think many people dont realize how prevalent ads are on radio theyre almost numbed by it.

just to be clear the laughing face was not about your career. i was being sincere. important to enjoy what you do. that face was for sentence before.

Cant you get the BBC over there? No adverts and plenty of costume dramas, it's wizzard!
-
i can appreciate your lowercase rant on advertising and the demeaning, condescending, patronizing immaturity of most of it, but you dont know how lucky you are. youre living in commercial nirvana and im living in shift key and commercial hell.
imagaine if you lived where i do and have to tolerate obnoxious 15 second commercials played back to back because its cheaper to run 2 - 15 second commercials than 1 - 30 second commercial featuring tiger woods pitching canned coffee - the wonder coffee guy mouthing the words wonderful wonder or tough guy stallone selling hams or tough guy schwarzeneggar playing the banjo and dressed in a clown outfit selling noodles or beckham selling facial salons for men or tough guy dennis hopper sitting naked in a bathtub playing with little yellow rubber ducks.
suck it up and quit complaining. it could be alot worse.

I'm with you anonymous. I have very similar feelings about commercials and advertisment in general.
-
i dont have a problems with commercials per say, just mute em or change the channel, theyve never affected my judgement anyway, since i generally dont care that some sports superstar was paid 20 grand to tell me how great this product is.
what i do have a problem with is "subtle" condesending bull**** they try to use. anyone whos seen/heard commercials from the 40's and 50's know what im talking about.
luckily, within the next 10 years, commercials will go the way of the dinosour. advertising will be done through product placement inside the actual shows.
